Lunch hunting...

Got out for a lunch hunt this week and dug a few things...
Figured I'd hit a spot that may have been overlooked, and like they say,
no place is ever hunted out.
First item was a silver spoon, saw the markings, but it's only silver plated.
(maybe the older ones have more silver though... it sure makes a nice silver
sound when I tap it on the counter)
Then I saw an old, gold colored compact laying on the ground. It was beat
up, glass was gone, I picked it up, and a couple inches from where it was,
I got a deep signal... turned out to be a 1949 wheatback cent.
After digging a modern penny, nickel, and some trash, I hit a good signal
that had my machine screaming. At only about 3 inches down, a silver coin
popped out = 1906 S Barber dime.
Fresh out of the ground:
After some light cleaning/rinsing:
1906 S Barber dime
Fun finds for a lunch hunt... Barbers don't show up too often so I thought
I'd post some pictures.
Happy hunting everyone!

<<Great lunch hunt... wow.. a Barber.. very cool.... Cheers, RickO >>
Thanks RickO, yes, barbers during lunch are a nice surprise!
<<Nice find Riccar!!!! Still new to MDing would you mind telling me what you used to clean your items with? How long did it take to clean/soak,etc. them? Thanks, Rich >>
Thanks RocketMan Rich, the coins from this location seem to come out pretty clean and don't need much cleaning. In this case, I just let it run under hot water, let it soak a couple minutes, and gently moved the dirt off with soap, noticed all the dirt wasn't coming off, so I put soap on a soft toothbrush and took off the remaining crud. If this would've been a key date coin, like an '03-S, I would not have done that... I probably would've only let it soak in water for a longer amount of time to see if the dirt would come off. I knew this coin didn't have the details for a high grade, so I wasn't very careful with it. Hope that helps.
<<nice dime. seems like i always find ticks up there. maybe i can try the demo work up there this weekend. maybe another gold coin waiting for me. >>
Thanks DD, last time I was there a couple months ago, I was going along, looked down at my shoulder since I saw a speck, and sure enough, it was a tick. That sort of ruins my concentration, and I think I was done for the day during that trip. This time I stayed close to where the dirt is being moved, got up close to the bushes, but didn't really go rubbing up against them (in order to avoid those little hitch-hikers!) Hope you can find something in the dirt pile that I told you about...
Lafayette Grading Set
Thanks Pocketpiececommems.
When it first came out of the ground, for some reason I thought it was feeling "thin" and thought it may be a worn-slick coin, but after the bath, I was surprised it actually had some good detail.
Very nice finds! A Barber is one of my goals for this year.
Thanks SilverDreams.
From what I remember, you and your brother have been close this year. Hope you guys can hit one of those turn of the center spots again and bag a barber
There's something special about 1906-S coins, with the earthquake/fire tie-in and all.
<<it was hot out there today. got 4 wheaties: 1917, 1919,1920+1924. also a nice ornate suspender thing. then there was the gold ring i put in another posting. >>
There's old stuff there but it's not easy... awesome ring. Hope you find out if it's old. Only gold I've pulled from there was an old, gold locket with a b/w pic in it (pic had faded away). Markings on the locket suggest it was from the 1920's.

Thanks Rob, funny... some of the guys out here refer to the 1906-dimes as "Earthquake dimes."
I have always wanted to go detecting, it seems like fun!

Thanks Cgb.
I've really enjoyed it... my father gave me an appreciation for coin collecting at an early age, and then one day during a family vacation I saw a guy detecting on the beach... got me interested but didn't really pursue the hobby until I was older. It's been a lot of fun.
<< <i>Barbers don't show up too often >>
Same here. I wonder why?
Nice finds!
