Rick Ankiel, 9 HRs, 29 RBIs in 23 Games and Now HGH?

I did not see this coming, but I can't say I'm surprised. But ESPN is reporting that Rick Ankiel's name has surfaced in a steroids investigation out of a Florida-based pharmacy. "Ankiel received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, The New York Daily News reported, citing clinical records and data its reporters saw."

  • As soon as a guy starts doing well, this crap comes out every time. You can not have faith in anyone any longer. For me though, these stories come out so much that I do not even know what to believe. Sad really that this is what has become of our national pastime. image

Really? You didn't see it coming? Wow. Have you been living through the last 30 years?

Imagine trying to compete in any sport where you are clean and everybody else is on streroids and/or HGH? You would have to be spectacular. No surprise here. I buy into those 85% estimates (for all sports).

Why would this be surprising? He's just another in a long list of juicers who play or played for Tony LaRussa. Coincidence? I don't think so.

I have always thought the same.
#LetsGoSwitzerlandThe Man Who Does Not Read Has No Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read. The biggest obstacle to progress is a habit of “buying what we want and begging for what we need.”You get the Freedom you fight for and get the Oppression you deserve.
  • Note that the sports organizations themselves are unable to know who is using, the only way they can determine is if law enforcement identifies them. And since law enforcement catches such a small percentage of drug user, perhaps now the only option is to either use drugs or be unemployed. The people at the top over the past four or five decades deserve far more of the credit and blame than LaRussa or Ankiel. . .

Ankiel has not been accused by authorities of wrongdoing, and stopped receiving HGH just before Major League Baseball officially banned it in 2005, The News reported.

So a minor leaguer tried a legal supplement in 2004 (possibly to rehab from an injury?) and quit using it before it was banned by MLB. Sorry, but this is a non-story.
  • Reportedly stopped using...does anyone think for a second that a guy desperate to get back into the majors wouldn't do anything or try anything to get an advantage?

  • As long as he keeps helping my fantasy team, I don't care. People always cheat. If, they want to destroy themselves then fine. Of course it makes the records and stats meaningless, but I need those power numbers for Ankiel.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Just wait until someone gets pissed at him. Then he'll "magically" be linked to some steroids scandal some place. I don't believe ANY of these steroid stories. More of then than not, nothing comes of it due to the fact that the media blows EVERYTHING out of propotion. According to the media, if you lived on the same street as someone who did steroids, then you are automatically guilty of steroid use. Until something comes out saying "This player tested positive for PED use on this date in this year when the use of these drugs was not legal" then I won't believe anything. That story holds about as much water as me saying "Hank Aaron was once seen talking to an individual who used performance enhancing drugs in the 1970's."

  • Come on, you don't buy any of these steroid stories?

I know you want to believe the game is pure - hell we all do. But the fact of the matter is that baseball turned a blind eye to steroids and then instituted some silly testing program. HGH is untestable and players, massive numbers of players are taking it. Why wouldn't they? Gives them a competitive advantage and its completely untestable. Remember, its not testing that is busting these guys, its illegal operations that are leaking their names.

I think everyone in White Sox nation was pissed at him to the point they wished they had something on him to ruin his career.

That's the best arguement I've seen that baseball should revert to pre-2003 rules when steroids, HGH and all other drugs were not banned. That's the only way to not put players in the position of cheat or lose employment

  • Kinda ironic how NY reports this story hours after he hits 2 HR's last night. Perfect timing.
I think he used HGH to help bounce back from his injuries. And honestly Rick always had the longball power even back in HS. No excuses though.

Last week i was in Houston rooting him on from the RF seats. Days later i'm totally disgusted. Already had to deal with one fraud back in the late 90's and now another. Ricky needs to be a man and talk asap.
As for now bench his A$$ and put in Schumaker or Ludwick.

Oh, I believe in the steroid stories. The stories where people have been found guilty of using them. Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco, Jason Giambi. They all said they took steroids, or were found guilty of taking steroids. Everybody else? It's just a bunch of "he said/she said". There hasn't been ANY positive tests for Barry Bonds. ZERO positive tests for Rick Ankiel. Just a bunch of crap in the media saying that they were somehow tied to steroid individuals.

When I was in college, I was friends with a lot of people who were drug dealers. Does that mean that I was a drug dealer? No. When I was in college there were also times that I bought heroin. Did I ever use it? Hell no! Yeah I thought about it when I bought it, but then I realized "This is incredibly f-ing stupid so why the hell did I wasted my money?"

I won't believe that a person used steroids or performance enhancing drugs until someone tests positive for it. That's it.
