Got this at the Red Sox game last night

My cousin has worked for the Red Sox in the clubhouse since 1979. Rarely do I ever ask him to get me anything but this year I've been asking him to get me a Dice-K ball or a team ball.
Friday night I went to the game and was able to find him during the game. Although he wasn't able to come up with either of my requests, he disappeared into the clubhouse for about 5 minutes and returned with this for me.

Funny thing is he was supposed to start last night going for his 17th win but got scratched late due to a sore back. Turns out he was the only one in the clubhouse when my cousin went in to find something for me.

Thanks Dean!!

  • Tim Wakefield is one of the nicest baseball players you'll ever meet. He grew up and went to high school 15 minutes away from me and played baseball at my Dad's alma mater- Florida Tech as a 1st baseman and has the all time record for home runs there. My dad also got a chance to work with his dad for a few years before Tim made it real big and he retired. He also has a charity called the space coast early intervention center that helps handicaped and underprivileged kids. Great guy, and Congrats on the ball! That must be pretty awesome having a cousin in the Red Sox organization.
  • I sure wish that the Pirates never let him go. He had a spectacular first year. Then slumped the second year as the Pirates started their 15 season losing streak. He was sent to the minors only to be released before ever being recalled. The Pirates have wasted much more time on several over hyped bums since then. I guess they figured that his knuckleball was a fluke thing. Turns out Wakefield also became one of a long list of guys that the great Pirate front office misjudged to be worthless. I will always love the Pirates no matter how horrible the team is but talking about guys like Wakefield can make a dedicated Pirates fan go wacko.
  • The best post-1933 pitcher to never make an All-Star team, I think

1995 he almost won the Cy Young, now in 2007 he has been a great contributor to the best pitching staff in the league

Massachusetts thanks the Pirates for letting him go

Cool story, when did he start pitching if he was a 1st baseman there?

We (Red Sox fans) have always loved Wakefield here. Thanks for giving him a good home image

Yeah. Too bad Wake got stratched from the game. Was looking forward to watching him pitch for his 17th win. He's my favorite player on the team and the ultimate underdog. He'll never win a Cy, but I thought it would be great for him to finish the year as the league leader in wins.

He was converted to a pitcher after a couple non-successful seasons batting in the minor leagues (around 1990?)
  • I am another disappointed Pirate fan that he does not pitch for us anymore. On the bright side he does pitch for my 2nd favorite team.
  • is that wakefield's sig? Very nice and he is so undervalued.
