Completed my 7070 Nickels!

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,150 ✭✭✭✭✭
I’ve been working on my 7070 for a little over two years now and recently completed my nickels, so I thought I’d share. I’m rather pleased of how they turned out. While my collecting tastes and knowledge have grown over the period, luckily my early purchases didn’t turn out so bad IMO. The 1868, 1911 and 1938-D are ex-PCGS, while the rest were purchased raw. While the journey netted no real stories of significance to share, there will be my little memories of: among my first on-line auction wins, to searching through a whole box of graded 38-Ds, to spending the better part of a show searching out my $7 war nickel (and finding a dealer who had an original role to pick from), to finding the T-1 Buff for a bargain (dealer was selling it as an MS60)to the Eureka moment when I found a well struck AU shield w/rays. So, here they are. Comments welcome.

Very nice. I just filled all of the holes in my 7070 nickel section this weekend, and I am not happy with the shield w/ rays that I picked up. While it is an attractive coin, it doesn't match the other coins very well.

I envy your AU w/ rays. I thought I was done too, but I am back on the hunt.

    Very nice matched set! Awesome.

Are all the other coins in the set gonna bet this nice?

    Congratulations!

You got me looking at Shield Nickels and the possibility of pursuing that set!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I had a boss tell me once that anything was possible given enough time and money. Good thing this is a long term project. That said, there are a handful in the set that are that are prohibitively expensive, so probably not. But aside from those few I hope to be able to pull off AU, and nice AU’s with something going for them can reside nicely next MS coins.

Nicely done. Your pic doesn't show it very well, but your 1911 Lib nick has killer toning, doesn't it.

Hang onto that shield w/ rays. Stupidest coin I ever sold (not that it was the coin's fault) was an 1867 w/ rays, like yours with an uncommonly nice strike. I bought another a couple years later, but it doesn't even come close to the one I split ways with. That is a tough thing to find.

It's a really nice group you've built. Thanks for sharing.

It does indeed. Maybe some day I'll learn how to capture color.

Really attractive group of coins that offers a history lesson of the US Nickel (mercifully omitting the recent flurry of "types")

  • Very nice, I am envious. I just recently started collecting by type. I am focusing on good quality affordable 20th century pieces and finding even that to be a challenge. I recently picked up a nice '64 XF two center that I think may have a shot at AU as it has quite a bit of red fire left in it and the wear is very minimal. I have been meaning to post some pics and get the board's opinion but my camera (and my skills with coin photos) suck image Anywho, congrats on the great progress. Looking forward to more pics.
