Walnut season? (A little OT)

I believe I remember someone on this forum talking about collecting wild walnuts and taking them to a hulling station. I have alot of walnut trees on my property and I was wondering if they would care to share the ins and outs of collecting them. Best time, how many I need to make it worth my while, etc. I realize that the season probably is different in areas but I want to know when they are ripe, how long they keep before I should bring them in, whats a decent price. I dont need uber details just some basics but I also am not adverse to free expert advice either. I think that this would a fun hobby, metal detecting while scooping up walnuts. Thanks in advance for any help.

I usually start picking them up towards the middle of September. The main product is not the Walnut meats but the shell. It's used for sand blasting jet engines etc. I got 13 cents a pound for them, after they get the hulls off, the last 2 years. If you have a bunch of trees that are loaded you should do pretty good. The freeze this spring in the midwest took care of a lot of them and I don't expect to do as well. But you don't know till they start dropping.

They also use the shells to sandblast log houses. Good tumbling medium too.
