I would never trust a slimy baseball card dealer who sets up at a show. There are so many horror stories about dealers ripping off hobbyists. Sometimes I feel that these baseball card shows are a convergence of the worst people in society....criminals, con men, ripoff artists, etc.

Call the local police in his area. If this guy has a history of ripping people off, the police might be familiar with him and might be able to help you out.

If this is the Naxcom show---call (Chris?) Weber. When i left Cali in 04' he was the one in charge of thw big show there. He is also a dealer there.

Not an ethical dealer by any standard.

Ron, you did the right thing about giving him an ultimatum via email. You need to have this thing documented somehow, so that email was a start. I don't think the local police will help because there is no paper trail of the transaction and simply would tell you to try the court system--that is a dead end because of the lack of documentation. I believe Ron's account of the story, but a small claims judge will have to rule according to what documentation he has. Was there any reciepts? It sounds like there was not, unfortunately. However, I am no lawyer, so there may be other recourses that I am unfamiliar with.

    Ron,

Next time (if there is a next time) you deal with a dealer, let him think there's more where this came from. He would be more motivated to close this deal quickly and quietly thinking there was more to follow

Yes. I apologize for not updating everyone sooner. We reached a deal for him to purchase some of the cards and return the rest. I am expecting a package containing those cards and a check to be in my hands by Saturday. I will update the board when I receive them and make sure everything is returned that was supposed to be returned.

It took about 2 hours to reach this agreement on Sunday, so it was not easy but provided that I receive everything properly, it is satisfactory to me. I'd like to thank all the board members who encouraged me to remain strong against this guy.

    Thanks,

    Ron

Next time I buy a new car, I'm gonna go back to the dealership a week later and say I've decided to reduce my monthly payments by $50 because the car isn't as good as I thought it was.

You were a lot more flexible on this deal than I would've been. His choices would have been to either: 1) pay me what he owed me, or 2) police involvement. Bottom line, he agreed to a deal. You can't switch it mid-stream, especially after selling off some of the cards. My instincts tell me that by you letting him "owe you the rest", he took this as a sign that he could walk all over you, which is exactly what he did. I would actually tell people in your area about everything that went down. At the very least, this guy deserves to lose business.

I think you make some good points......if I didn't think I could make about $2000-$3000 on what he is sending back, you can be sure I would've had it all returned.

    Ron

PS. And you're right....I won't be so flexible next time.

Ron- I honestly got a little angry reading about how this guy treated you. Now that you mention it, I remember you saying you thought you could've sold them for more, so getting the cards back is definitely a good thing if that's the case. Glad it worked out for you.

    Ron,

you have remained the good guy in all of this. You never outed this guy even though the masses were bloodthirsty at this point. You kept a cool composure this far on a deal that would have made many of us really angry since we are talking about significant money. We all suffer lapses of good judgement from time to time and you recognized that soon after making the deal. Don't be hard on yourself, everyone on here I am sure did something they felt later was not the right move.

I look forward to the next update and hope all is over with minimal loss. I know this has been a real hassle for you dealing with this guy. What is strange is that you have dealt with him before and thought you had good rapport with him. Well, he is responding to your request, so it could have been a lot worse.

    Lee,

You really felt that much empathy for Ron? You must be a good guy in your own right. I strongly believe in board members standing tough as a united front against less than ethical dealers.

    Guys -

I received the cards back yesterday. I've not gone through all of them, but they appear to all be here. I appreciate all of the advice and comments from y'all........a lot of lessons learned in this and if I can ever help any of you in any way, just let me know.

    Thanks again,

    Ron

PS. As for another board member who chose to make a snide comment in another thread about my experience with this, baby arm to you. You know who you are.

Your hobby passions were strong enough to travel to the national. Do not let that bad experience "sour you" in "breaking bread" with other dealers/sellers in the future.

In years past, it was a fairly common practice to "invoice" a dealer, by "dropping-off" material (they would pay u later!). I'm quite sure 95% of the dealers at the National would have paid you for your items, if they agreed on a price.

The lesson learned: You didn't do anything wrong! Other than "picking a bad apple" (i.e., picking a bad seller)! Maybe a typed invoice "stating agreed on terms" (plus maybe, "Net 10 days" or "Net 30 Days" on your invoice would have helped!) with a stamped return envelope should have been sent to the dealer as soon as you got home, would have showed that you are on top of your inventory/dealings?

    rd

P.S. Plus Ron, don't worry about a "snide comment" from another poster about your experience, as "opinions are like a-wholes, ....everybody got one"!

Edit: Oh yeah! Glad u got your material returned to you - all ok!

    Ron,
You should still warn the others of this dealer. I would love to know who never to deal with again. I understand your wanting to keep things civil, but PM me his name if you don't want to post it here.

Unfortunately this "hobby" leaves a lot of room for people to be taken advantage of by less than ethical people. I also agree that Ron handled it the best he could once he realized what was happening. Instead of outing the guy here and at his local shows, he used it as a bargaining chip in getting his stuff back which is something I would not have thought of. No one wants their name smeared in the mud and even though this guy probably deserves it, getting his cards back was the most important thing.

I'm glad to hear this has finally, though painstakingly, resolved itself. I've just gotten back into the hobby. I have a lot to learn about the hobby as it is in its current form, but I hope experiences like this don't proliferate and ruin the reason I've always, despite my absence, loved this hobby.
