What are the greatest baseball cards of all time?

I'm not talking about price or rarity here. I want to know what you find to be the best looking or most appealing card or cards. You don't have to own the card and it can be vintage or modern, star player or common, base card or insert, etc. My favorites are the 1953 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese and 1971 Topps Nolan Ryan. Feel free to post a picture if you have an example you are proud of.

  • I agree with you. The 1953 Bowman Reese is awesome. I also love the 1976 Topps Johnny Bench, 1963 Topps Lou Brock, 1954 Topps Warren Sphan and 1951 Bowman Larry Doby.

The 1953 Bowman color Stan Musial and Mickey Mantle. Just great cards.
Just glad to be here with everyone.

My favorites are '53 Bowman Color, '53 and '54 Topps. The 1952 Bowman Large Football are some of the best cards every made as well, I have a very hard time deciding which company put out the best overall product, Topps or Bowman. If I had to chose it might be Bowman.

For modern cards, I really like the '91 Topps Clemens #530, but for vintage, I'm very fond of the '62 Topps Roger Maris #1.

All good choices - I've always loved the RED on the '52 Topps Jackie Robinson - don't have one but I wish I did! Long ago, when I worked in a coin/card store as a teen, there was one that sat in the display case for many years (my boss priced it high for the time) but it was a nice one, decent centering, about EX. Looked at it many times - wonder where it is now? (My old boss passed away some 5 years ago.)

Griffey UD is a Great Card.

Griff- Do you own all of those cards? That Paige is sweet.

This is one of my all-time favorites, a nobody, but the card is one of the best for me. Great action shot, with the ump watching the play. I look at this card and I think that it is almost a piece of art.

I don't have any scanned, but every card in the '34-'34 Diamond Stars sets is really nicely designed.

    Allen- yes.

    Great list so far everyone.

Griffins: Very nice cards. I love the Campanella. I had never seen it before and it is now on my list right behind the '53 Bowman Reese. Amazing!

Before Matt does it. 1990 Score Update Emmitt Smith. He could have played baseball too.
  • My fav has to be 1964 Koufax World Series Strikeouts #136. When I got this in a penny pack in 1964, what amazed me was his stretch. He is longer left to right than from head to toe on this card.

I think one of the nicest designs (even though the set is pretty much worthless) it the 1988 Donruss Baseball's Best set. It's identical to the regular 1988 Donruss set except they replaced the blue with bright orange.

  • 1912 Ty Cobb Hassan Triple Folder. A stunning card!!!!

Let me bring this up a few years for us 30/40 somethings:

    71 munson
any 75 or 76 oscar gamble
    75 ralph garr
    78 reggie
    82 fisk in action

72 carew is a favorite because of the player in the background playing golf with a bat and baseball.
  • 1973 Luis Alvarado
  • I'll nominate the '34 Lou Gehrig w/ the yellow background. Now that's a smile!!
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Forgot the '34 Gehrig- I'll agree, that is one of the nicest cards of all time IMO.

You know, I was going to make a witty comment but it wouldn't do these cards justice.

    Awesome cards, Griffins.

I'll offer two cards both from the 1953 Topps set; again, it's just a question what appeals to the collector: Monte Irvin (#62) and Satchel Paige (#220). Two close behind: Stan Musial, 1962 (#50) and Ernie Banks, 1966 (#110). "The art of collecting is knowing how to please yourself."
  • The 1915 Ty Cobb Cracker Jack card. A classic baseball card that looks like a piece of artwork!!

Wow, my favorite set of all time (I have 5 of them) and I never noticed that before. Thanks!

I'll agree with that. Also I'd add countless T3 Turkey Reds. Those things really are works of art to me. For modern I'd throw some 1950-52 Bowman into the mix.

  • I love the 84 Donruss Mattingly, 83 Topps Boggs, Gwynn, Sandberg.

The 84 Donruss is just so cool looking. It was a premium card back in the days before 89 Upper Deck.

1983 Topps is great with the little windows in the corner.

1956 Mantle, Snider are so cool too.
    Man I miss the 80's!!!
