After a horrific stretch, Maddux appears back on track with wins in three straight starts. (He won tonight.) He's up to 353 career wins, only one behind Clemens' 354. I'm glad he's pitching well (though, even during that bad stretch he was generally pitching well) because I don't want him getting any crazy retirement ideas.
I'll guess he'll get three (3) more wins this season and finish with 356. That puts him within Warren Spahn's 363 and Pud Galvin's 364 career wins by the end of next season (assuming he doesn't retire). I think Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson's 373 wins is unrealistic. But you never know.
Nice outing by the Unit ... 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts for victory number 294. Unit now needs 6 wins out of his final 8 starts. I calculate his final three starts as being on September 15, 20 and 25 ... versus S.F., at Colorado and at St. Louis.

Yea, any other team besides the Padres weak offense, and Maddux would have easily passed clemens by now....looking forward to that day!
If he's within reach of 300 by season's end, that'd add a little extra jazz to the usual pennant race talk.
I bet he'll retire if he does hit the mark this year... I mean, as old and frail as he is, he's still better than MOST pitchers... but he is frail and his back is always one tweak away from snapping in half.
Remember when Nolan Ryan's elbow gave out in Seattle? Yeah, I saw that in-person and it was NOT pretty.

So true. Now it's seven (7) out of the next (9) nine. Going to be tough.

Also, once again, I think a drug company needs to sign him up to endore Cialis, Viagra, or any of those other Unit boosting pills.
