CAREFUL THIS THREAD WAS STARTED IN THE YEAR 2007!!!!

I just acquired this lovely coin from a fellow PCGS board member. This is an example of conservative grading but also does not pay to crack out for a higher grade. These doily inserts are becoming harder and harder to find.

Now green CAC stickered.

These doily holders are an example of the plastic slowly becoming more important than the coin itself!

    Nothing wrong with that!

Amen, brother. Now if you just had that coin in a black NGC slab...you'd be cookin' for certain!

When you look closely at the doiley, you'll notice the outer 'casing' is a separate piece. The slab is slightly thicker and larger than the newer ones. The only doiley I have has a Canadian Dollar in it.

"Very Nice" oreville! image That ones well worth a premium, if you paid one. Wish I owned one. I think these old Hallmark Holders fall into the same category, no?

  • I like. Was just thinking last night about how much I hate ICGs green marblized insert, ug-ly.

    LeeG:

Those old Hallmark slabs are still ot there but they are in the top twenty famous slabs to have and are slowly appreciating as well in value premium-wise.

Now that coin demonstrates why it used to be you could put together a great AU58 set with much nicer eye appeal than a low grade MS set. That is a right handsome coin.

I must admit when it comes to the doily holder I have fallen for the plastic as well. I have a common 37-D Oregon in a doily graded 66 and IMO it is a 67+ all day long. But since the jump in value is only a couple hundred bucks I'm keeping the plastic.image

Did you go for the gold CAC on that beauty?

llafoe: Green not gold. Very high end but not enough for a gold.

Very precious few remaining doily slabs have ever gotten a gold sticker as the vast majority had been cracked out long ago but the remaining ones are generally very PQ for the grade.

So, did you bump this thread because you are getting ready to sell? or just showing off that beautyimage

Very nice looking coin in a cool holderimage
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭✭
Batman23: Absolutely NOT getting ready to sell. Just thrilled that I rediscovered the old pictures of this lovely coin that I figured I better update this thread before it disappears into archives.

On the other hand, my wife only likes it when I sell not buy. But then again, isn't that par for the course?

Superb piece . . . and (partially) answering the Billet7 question of wondering if there are many non-MS coins left in Doilies. The Census shows a couple, but this one is superb. Obviously a nice coin. I concur. The Doilies I have run into seem to be fairly accurate on the grades. I think the only crackable ones you may find now would be those undisturbed for 15-20 years and not subject to the crackout-craze. But as of this time, I'd not expect to see many cracked out anyway as the Doily seems to be moving into 'its own'.

Not so sure about that $5 gold that sold on eBay two months ago though . . .I bet that plastic has loooong since been relegated to a landfill and the new (coinshop) owners are revelling in a higher grade. Oh well . . . I think a couple of us will preserve them.

Oreville . .thinking about sending mine in to the green-beaners. I understand from past threads that you did and were happy with the results. I think it might be fun to send them and then do a post on the results. Just for fun.

OK, in between airplanenut yesterday and now oreville . . . I am appropriately put in my place.

    Nice Doilies gents!
