1854-O $2 1/2 - What does everyone think?

I saw this coin on the internet and thought it looked kind of cool, what does everyone think about it? It's still up for sale as far as I'm aware.

    Looks washed out but I think that's the image. The NGC label and plastic insert look way too bright too so my guess is the coin is darker in hand than in the pic.

    the image isnt that great, but the coin looks fairly graded, the Rev looks a little more worn than the Obv?

    The -54-O quarter eagle is the 13th most common New Orleans quarter eagle out of 14 in the series. There are three varieties from this year, and that coin looks to be Variety Three. Note how the "1" in the date is in the denticles. Doug Winter estimates that there are 200-300 coins knows in EF condition. Winter also states that "it is still reasonably easy to find a piece with nice color, although more and more are displaying evidence of having been cleaned or dipped." Personally, I think with a little searching, you can probably find a better looking coin. The reverse seems to have a lot of wear, and I am not sure about the color of the coin. Here is one that I have, which is called AU58 by NGC. Note the really cool color, and the die stress lines:

    Photo is too overexposed to make a call.

    I'm not affiliated with this seller or anything, but I'd much rather have this one for under $1000:

    Link to PCGS AU58 1854-O
  • If I remember correctly, the price on the XF40 was $240

    Plain Jane common date Zero mint™ coin. Wait for another with more character.

    It's not bad. Better than the Classic $5's I have for sale.
  • One thing that I've found with these guys photos is that they are often overexposed and do not show hardly any gold color. I would love to view this coin in hand.

    If you like it buy it. The price is about right for that quarter eagle.

    I wasn't considering purchasing it, just liked the way it looked for 153 years old

  • Obverse = below average
    Reverse = terrible

    Is that a Gainesville Coins photo? Their photos are always washed out like that & that's their photo format (ie shot of slab beside 2 sides of coin). If it's a private seller, they probably bought it from Gainesville & are recycling the images!
