Definately looks proof-like,but the denticles look a little weak in spots so I'll say it is a business strike and a nice one at that!

Looks proof, but what's with the denticles at 6 o'clock? (obv.)

    Proof.
  • Without seeing a close-up of the denticles I'll go with BS.

    Russ:

Just curious... are there are significant die polishing lines?

    I'd lean toward PF

I voted it as a Proof. The overall appearance combined with the quality of the strike leads me to believe it is a proof. The denticles will likely look stronger in hand.

Not my specialty, but looks proof to me.
  • I voted Biz strike. The denticles are a big clue to me. Some other details don't look fully struck up to me either.

BTW I just love proof like seated coins. I haven't seen as many PL Barbers but I like those too.

It's in an NGC business strike holder, graded MS67. It has exceptionally prooflike qualities, though - even more so in hand then in the images. The strike and surfaces compare quite favorably to the 1905 proof I posted in another thread. If it were evaluated raw, I'd bet that no better than half who view it would conclude it's a business strike. I would guess proof myself, if I didn't know better.

BTW, we have some VERY sharp forum members. I got this PM from one:

<< <i>I won't judge surfaces or rims based on an image, but the obverse appears to be what I call a "small-date" MS. This is the only variety of this date that frequently comes PL-ish, and I have seen them sneak into PR holders from time to time, despite considering them MS pieces myself. >>

I guessed BS just based on the bottom dentilation on the obverse. That may not be always correct though. It would be interesting to see the edge. That will typically give it away, if the edge has mirrors or not.
