Big sale at David Lawrence Rare Coins...

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
Did anyone see this? They are having a 5% across-the-board sale at DLRC. I can ususally find something to buy from their site, so I wanted to let everyone know. Here is the posting from the website:

5% Off Everything!

We are celebrating the pre-Independence Day Weekend by offering 5% off our entire inventory -- coins, currency, stamps and books!

Offer Ends Wednesday, July 4th at Midnight.

dlrc when it comes to half eagles has some of the ugliest stuff
i have ever seen on the market. he has these constant auctions
with minimums too high to ever sell. it is the same crap week after
week and you advise people to go over and buy some of it?

    thanks, but no thanks.

maybe cool it a bit on this advertising/spam/helpful tips that to

Personally, I've purchased some very nice coins from DLRC. Additionally, their return/refund policy is as "hassle-free" as any I've ever seen.

Thanks for the heads-up on the sale. -Preussen

They often have this type of sale. They have a ton of dregs on their site. Although, I've been fortunate and bought some decent stuff in the past.

It's been my experience that many, if not most, of DLRC's coins are priced on the "high retail" end of the spectrum. That being said, it's also been my experience (in my areas of interest) that DLRC has some superb quality coins on a regular basis. You're not going to get a "steal" with them but you sure as heck may get a coin that will serve you quite well. I don't mind paying a strong price for an A+ coin, I just feel happy that I was able to add it to the collection at all.

The convention is that one can alert the forum to coin sales, so long as they are not their own coins for sale. Heck, half the threads here link directly or indirectly to ebay.
  • DoogyDoogy Posts: 4,508
their website is easy to navigate, you can enlarge their pictures and they seem to have nice coins. However, i think their prices are a little high compared to other sources/dealers, so it would take more than 5% off to get me to bite; which is a shame, 'cause i've got my eye on a couple of nice pieces.

I don't see a problem posting this as long as the poster has no affiliation with the items being presented in the thread.

If, as evidenced by your cranky posts to every topic that even hints at some sort of commerce, you're so worried about the integrity of this Forum, why are you then cheerfully posting to blatantly off-topic threads like this one?

You actually had a valid point on a couple of the threads you called out last week, but now you've gone clear over the edge. If you're going to whine on every thread that even mentions buying and selling, maybe you can find a nice site that talks about collecting pocket change to haunt instead?

DLRC has 5% off sales quite commonly. It is very thoughtful of you to advertise for DLRC right down to quoting the sites's sales text.

You ought to load up then.

    Longacre:

I, too, am surprised. I was pretty sure of what this thread was going be about due to the name you gave it. If I had had no interest in learning about the sale, I wouldn't have bothered to open the thread, much less post nonsense about. So, I join the many thanking you for the post. And I join the many wishing the few (actually, the one) to not bother to open similar threads in the future.

5% off on coins that couldn't find homes. Last chance before dumping them into an auction or wholesaling them. If there's one thing I've learned here about great coins is that you get them when they are freshly purchased.....often at a show. If you're the 100th person to see something (99 have passed by), how is that gonna be a bargain at 5%, or even 10% or even 15% off? You have a far better chance of competing with your dealer on a newp that you see first, before anyone else, or close to that. You may think you're paying strong, but maybe not. But after 100 have passed by, you KNOW you're paying strong.

Much better than posting about paypal issues, bad e-bayers, and so many whining about someone not receiving their $20 modern on time, or not receiving a $20 payment on time and the sky falling. All those issues should be on the BST site as far as Im concerned. Actually, PCGS should just ban the boards entirely. Pretty worthless.

There have been lots of coins that doubled in the past 2 years.

I'd say the chances of it being a good deal because of a great seller is less likely than the market helping you out. If you were lucky enough to buy a $10 Indian or a flowing hair half for example at the right time, you doubled up. It had nothing to do with the seller. It's possible you might have tripled up if you got the coin from another source? Food for thought. In fact I can list any number of coins I did well on.....I certainly don't give the seller any credit unless he found the coin for me, hand picked it and delivered it. And that happens very infrequently.

fc: At least Longacre did not make a big fuss about the sale other than simply stating that there was a 5% sale off everything.

Ok he did say Big sale, but most of us are already hardened to know about the perpetual 5% sales but at least the thought was nice!

Keep this in mind: When suffering with the insufferable relatives over this wonderful weekend at least you can pronounce that there is a BIG SALE at DLRC and go "see a man about a coin!"

Roadrunner, that sounds like fun. DLRC has discounted sales like that all the time. In fact, for established customers he'll usually give various discounts off the top anyway.

I just spent the day walking the floor at the Baltimore Convention. Frankly, I thought the vast majority of coins there were average, run of the mill, ho-hum, nothing too special...you get the point.

I have purchased a couple of really nice coins from DLRC. Just like with many other dealers, you have to look carefully and be willing to search through many average (or below average) coins, but you may find something very nice that's hidden and gone unnoticed.

back a while ago I purchased a few coins from the DLRC site with the make an offer thing- made my offer (low ball of course) and offers were accepted.

one in particular is a 56 frankie that was a proof 67 in a rattler.
Now to some this is not a big deal, but the sweet thing about those old rattlers - ya never know when one will come back as a 68 cam or even better- a 69 cam..........

I'm awaiting it's return before I post the pics of both the old and the new....

    again thanks Longacre...
