I recently picked up a corrected version of this 1975 Hostess panel to go along with the error version (Bill Madlock as a pitcher and the corrected infielder)
There are two other error variations in this set. One is a Lahoud, Hooten, and Blair panel with a error and corrected Burt Hooten/Hooton spelling. The other is
a Reggie Jackson, Rader, Maddox panel with an error and a corrected Doug Radar/Rader spelling. There has never been a corrected Hooton panel ever graded.
There is only one corrected Rader panel graded and it is a PSA 5.

  • Phil,

Great find with the error and corrected versions of the panels!

If you are still searching for some raw 1975 Hostess panels, you should check out eBay seller (carylewis) who has quite a few up right now.

    Have a great weekend,
    Chris

Thanks for the heads up Chris. It's always risky buying raw panels on ebay. It's really tough to see all of the scratches and scuff marks that are so prevalent on these panels.

I received my PSA grades. Here are some of the highlights.

I picked up this nice lot of rare "L" shaped 1978 Hostess panels. Eventually, I will trip them down for PSA submission. I believe they should all receive grades in the 7-8 range.

Glad to see this thread is still going. I was Armourguy - now a ArmourPhil.

I have the #1 and #2 1955 Armour coin sets and the #1 1959 set.

My other love is food issue panels due to their scarcity / condition sensitivity. I have also started grading box card panels from 1985 - 1991.

I have finally finished the 120 panel 1987 Kraft set which has 5 diff panels of all the key stars of the 1980s.

    http://www.psacard.com/PSASETREGISTRY/Composite.aspx?c=1037

I continue to work on all the Bazooka sets , all the Hostess sets and the Drakes sets.

The Hostess sets have all of a sudden taken off with folks starting to value the graded panels for hundreds of dollars each.
The grades for all of these in the Std catalog or other guide books are so far out of line it is laughable. These books have become completely useless.
EBay is now the market and the market sets the price.

Anyone want to see scans of any of these let me know.

Any chance you collect the 1959 Bazooka football or baseball?
These things are impossible to find cut right which explains the low pops graded with a number. I have some extras from trade if anyone has one that I could use for my collection.

I recently took a gamble and purchased a raw 1976 Hostess panel set on ebay. Normally I never shell out that kind of money for raw cards.

    1976 Hostess set

It paid off as I cut the panels down and submitted 20 of them to PSA for grading. Here are results.

    GEM MINT 10 1976 HOSTESS AARON/BELL/BRAUN HAND CUT-PANEL

Here are some highlights from my recent submission. My favorite is the Seaver/Robinson/May as it is the first PSA 9 (no 10's).

Just came in the mail today. Honestly never thought I would have one in my collection. Two graded, the other is "Authentic".

Does anyone collect 1959 Bazooka cards? Would love to hear your experience with grading on this issue.

1954 - grading 1959 bazooka just like the rest of the panels...if the dotted lines are not completely visible around the card, grade is no better than authentic.
  • 19541954 Posts: 2,898 ✭✭✭
Well this is exactly what I thought however I have seen examples where this was not the case. I called PSA for an explanation of how they grade these hand cut cards. She told me that all the lines did not have to be there but full/equal borders must be present. I was more confused about that statement than before I called them.

I you have examples of 59 bazooka without full dotted lines being graded > 0 please post pics.

Problem with PSA is that once they put a grade on it they will not change it. Early on in the grading of 1960 armour coins they were grading Mantles with half the back rim missing as PSA 8. When I brought this to their attention they came out with some BS about "the overall presentability" or some crap like that. Try sending one like that in now and it will get a PSA 6 or less every time.

I have a 59 Bazooka Mantle graded SCG 88 which is perfect ...but... has maybe 5% of the dotted line missing. I brought it to a show and PSA personnel recommended I not submit for regrade because it would get an "authentic"

  • You're right PSA normally will never change a grade and depending on who you talk to you may get 2-3-4 different stories...VERY inconsistent group

PSA states the following when it comes to grading hand-cut cards

In order for PSA to actually assign a grade to any of the cards that possess visible/defined borders on all four sides, evidence of that border must be present. If the cut exceeds the visible border for the card in question, PSA will encapsulate the card as "Authentic" only.

First thing is, what is "Evidence of that border must be present" mean? Does it mean every millimeter of every side of every border must be respect? Does it mean the majority of border must be present? Here is a card I have and it may be difficult to see, but only a very small area on the upper-left side of this card is below the border (It may look like more in the scan, but under magnification it's only a small amount). As you can see it was graded AUTHENTIC because of the area below the top border. I argued that "Evidence of all 4 borders is present and only a little bit is under". PSA responded to me...

"Actually the card does not have to have all 4 borders showing, but if it doesn't then the card must meet the minimum size requirements. Your card did not meet the min size requirement". Funny, for every other card I have submitted that did not meet the min size requirement it came back unencapsulated with a 'MINSIZEREQ' sticker on it. Yet this card came back as authentic. I tried to get an explanation on that and no one responded. I asked PSA to just change the verbiage for grading hand cut cards to all border must be present on all sides and they would not because they said that wasn't always the case. Make sense?? (I'm still scratching my head and that was 6 months ago!)

  • While I have enjoyed and appreciate PSA's services, I do get frustrated when I cannot get a straight answer.

I have run into issues with determining what will/will not be graded and what will/will not be included in registry sets.

I have had opportunities to buy certain items to have graded and included, but after checking with PSA I have been informed they would not be graded/added. Then, a little time goes by and the registry composite is updated to include the very items I had inquired about grading/adding. However, I no longer have the opportunity to purchase the items.

The worse issue has been when PSA has informed me they would grade/add items. I have spent quite a bit on items, sending them in for grading, to then NOT have them included. . .or they are removed/listed as optional for the registry collections. This is the most upsetting, as it has cost me quite a bit. . .and I have checked with them ahead of time!

I just want to be able to get a straight answer, regardless of which person I contact.
I only need 18 cards to complete the Don Mattingly Master collection. Help would be great!
  • If you want a straight answer, DO NOT CONTACT PSA!! :-) You're best bet is post questions/comments here and probably at least someone has experience with it. I could write a novel on some of the responses I have gotten from them; and yes adding cards to a registry isn't much fun (I have added approx 100 cards to the Terrell Davis registry, some it took me 3-4-5 emails, phone calls, many scans, etc. before they complied. Yes it is frustrating, but dont let it get to ya. It's just part of the game (At least that's how I approach it)

I've sent in my remaining 1976 Hostess panels for grading and have nearly completed the set. Attached is a link below. Let me know if anyone has a nice panel with George Scott.

    Thanks. I appreciate it.

I recently had this panel graded by PSA. It's taken a long time to find one in good enough condition to have graded.

I'm always looking to upgrade my sets. In particular I would like to improve upon my 1975 Hostess Bob Gibson panel.
