Is the future of numismatics at risk if collectors primarily use forums such as these for informatio

For most, I don't think forums and books are mutually exclusive, therefore there's little risk.
  • Doc, I wouldn't be collecting coins if there wasn't a US Coin Forum.

Without the internet, it would be a perpetual handicap and a sure path to owning crap.

People are people, each generation commonly seeing faults in the ones preceding and following it. But still, the personality types and potentials remain about the same statistically. That said, a notable thing we see with younger people today is impatience. It can be in assembling a quality collection, learning to grade, or locating information. Yes, it is far easier to google something, read a wiki article, or seach the archives of Heritage auctions or this forum than it is to wind through seemingly endless reels of National Archives microfilm, locate and read a real book, ... There sure is value in the easily gotten information, that is the benefit of the Information Age. The distinction always ends up favoring the person who consumes more elusive and original sources and the more patient, observant, and discriminating collector. That was true in the old days of on-approval mail order as well as our point-and-click eBay current era. There is no huge danger of people relying on this forum, pop reports and similar easy sources, no more than people who depended on nothing more than a redbook and stated mintages in the past.

I grew up collecting w/o a forum... can imagine when EVERYTHING was raw.

I also collected before the internet. There were many books on coin collecting that taught about grading, cleaned coins, counterfeit detection, etc. Also, there were many weekly and monthly coin papers and magazines with valuable information. I did not feel like I was "isolated from information". It was out there in abundance for anyone that wanted to take the time to read it.

You mean I shouldn't believe every written word? Man now what am I going to do?

Actually, I not only read numismatic books, I subscribe to NN, Coin World and Coin Magazine. Some of the information is redundent. And there is some great information on these boards you just need to understand there could be some inaccurate info now and then.
