I agree with you that there is no way that casual fans or kids will buy packs of these. However, casual fans may buy some of the singles that come out of this. Since the set is so varied and scarce, the single base cards will maintain their value. It will create an opportunity for the die hard soccer, boxing, swimming, fighting, .... fan to get something of their favorite sport in a form they may not have been able to get it before. This would certainly leave out kids but, like many other sets, it is a specialized set created for a specialized set of collectors and fans.
Die hard collectors will chase this set and with only 281 complete sets possible, the singles will be high priced. 281 is a small number but not an insane number (like limited to 25). I'll get a limited number of packs and hope that I can turn whatever other cards I get from the packs into completing the rest of the base set. It's going to be a fun challenge.
love the look of em,with i had enuff to buy a couple of cases, i do but its in the bank lol, and its gonna stay there, or id be broke, i could cash in my life insurance and buy a case i suppose lol the rube
What amuses me is that some of those autos are VERY easy to get at VERY LOW cost. Pete Rose, for example. And you can have Nolan Ryan sign something by sending it to his foundation with a suggested donation (they'll even slap on their own hologram). Tack on $20-30 for PSA/DNA if you want peace of mind, and that's still LOADS cheaper than gambling on a "pack" of 2007 Sport Kings.
Of course, some of those autos aren't easy... but who's crazy enough to break multiple packs?!
The economics just don't make sense. Why bother making packs at all? Why not just sell the individual cards at high prices right off the web site or through hobby shops?
I am very disappointed in the price of this set. For one thing the autos are not worth the money. If they inserted cut autos from the original sports kings then it might be worth the price but not for freaking Hulk Hogan or Picabo Street. Second, if I just want the base set I will just piece it together over 2 to 3 years while the next thing hits and everyone forgets about this set. Heck I am slowly putting my 2007 UD Premier set together as we speak. I just got my last platinum card for the 1997 Donruss Preferred set, I can be very patient.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
I bet they don't get the box for $256 because it is below cost. It's almost $100 under the cost! I think they are in trouble with the UD Goudey coming out. If the UD Goudey product is cheaper Sportkings is in a world of hurt.
I think that they tested the market properly before committing big money to Sport Kings. Or, this is an ID for Sport Kings to test out the market themselves.
Either way, unless they bring down that price per box/case, they are going to be sitting on product. Hopefully some folks crack these open (although it doesn't make a whole lot of sense at these prices) so that I can put together a base set of these cards.

lol thats all i want too arny, a a-rod and maybe a few others, the base set is cool looking, not impressed with the auto cards or the selection they put in em,think they coulda done better than that, evel kenevil and sugar ray robinson are about the only ones that appeal to me!alot of em you can get a whole lot cheaper just sending for them ,but theres always the people that have to have "everything",i was like that till "everthing" takes up just about my whole hose ,garage, and 2 rental stalls lol randy
i did see some of the goudy stuff opened last nite on ebay with their buyback old cards and some autos, not sure if i saw any base cards or not
Does anyone have a checklist of the cuts cards in this set? The new basketball beckett has pics of Jackie Robinson, John F. Kennedy, and Primo Carnera. Anyone know of any others?

i havnt heard, but thought they would have been relesed by now, there ws a big write up in either smr or beckett abot em,dont know if it had releasedate in there or not
I got an e-mail stating that it was a sell out and mentioned a few of the inserts that were never mentioned before like create your own insert 1/1 and Sport Kings patch insert of each star. They also mentioned that there are only 100 sets made. I signed up as a dealer but I did not order any of them because I think the price is too high and I have been stuck with enough garbage before. I could see $100 a pack but $325 is too much for what you get.

You'll probably see the base cards on ebay for less than $10 each.
Update: Dr. Brian H. Price of Sport Kings LP is pleased to announce the formal release date for Series A will be Thursday, November 1, 2007.
"We finally received all of our hard-signed autograph cards," said Sport Kings LP's Dr. Brian H. Price. "Now we can begin the pack-out process. We will spend a great deal of time hand-collating the cards in this product as that's what collectors will expect."
