Sport Kings Gum Cards are Back !!

Hey Sport Kings collectors.....they are back !!! I just saw their ad in the new Beckett Elite magazine.

http://www.sportkingsgum.com/

Unfortunately, it appears they do not have any licensing agreements with the leagues. Gotta love the Phil Hellmuth & Evel Knievel cards. The autograph program they put together is incredible (check the website).

Plus you can vote online on who you would want to see on a card.

I want that Lou Ferrigno card so bad. We need a campaign to get Chuck Norris in the set for marital arts. Freakin Chuck Norris

    I will buy some boxes.

    Release date October 2007.

The auto list is interesting, but there are some real
arrogant AHs in the mix. A graded set of the autos
is probably the only financially promising part of the
program; the base cards are not likely to EVER have
    any value.

I agree that Chuck Norris should be on the list.
Bruce Lee should be there too. Also, they should
do some kind of reprint inserts using the original
    Sport Kings list.

This is also a good opportunity for a card company
to give Pete Rose some creds.

There should be a skateboard card to get kids into
    buying cards.

All things considered, the concept is a good one; it
just needs alot more input from collectors and fans.

    A couple of random thoughts:
      Who's actually producing this set?
        Thurman Thomas?
          No Bo Jackson? That's crazy.
            No Mike Tyson?
The autograph lineup is *very* impressive. Let's hope they do it right and have on-card signatures.

              Of course.

The makers have made it pretty clear that Series 1
              cannot be all inclusive.

I know some things about MT. A long time from now,
it is likely that fans will accept the real truth about
one of the greatest fighters of all time.

I have been lobbying Greta Van Susteren to undertake
a comprehensive bio of Tyson. She has GREAT insight
into the truth about the man, and about the injustices
that have been visited upon him.

So that's a guaranteed autograph in every pack? That means this is going to be an EXTREMELY limited issue, right? I mean, how many packs can they possible produce? There are about 40 names on the autograph checklist. I can't imagine they'll get all those people to sign a thousand cards. So we're looking at 40,000 packs tops. Right?

If that math is correct it would take 16 packs (in a perfect world) to build a set. That would make each card limited to 2,500 cards. I guess I won't be able to get these at Target.

            • Dr. Price currently heads up In the Game, a company that has a great following despite losing their NHL license a few years ago. They continue to find creative ways to produce cards which collectors in the hockey market enjoy despite the lack of a license. They have had aa booth at The National for years and are very good people to talk with and they are open to feedback.

Here is a letter that I received this morning from my In the Game email updates. I think it is great that he is behind the project. I wonder why they are keeping it seperate from In the Game?

              Patrick

A Letter from Dr. Brian H. Price
              Dear Collectors,

Let me take a moment of your time to let you know about a new project that I am involved with, called Sportkings.

The original Sport Kings was one of the greatest brands in trading card history. Published in 1933, the set featured 48 of the greatest sports legends of their time. And now, after 73 years, I'm bringing back this exciting brand. It truly is one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.

I have not been as excited about a project since I revived the Parkhurst brand in 1990. Combining 1933 tradition with 2007 trading card creativity, this product will deliver collectability and value.

To learn more about the new Sportkings, visit www.sportkingsgum.com.

I would like to personally invite you to receive our Sportkings newsletter and be among the first to learn of new developments in the product (click here to subscribe).

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and thank you for all your support.

Here is some of the info I just got. What do you think?

"Products in the Super Premium category move over- here comes Sportkings Series A! Exquisite, Paradigm, National Treasures... make room this
October. Sport Kings LP is pleased to announce one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, Sportkings Series A. After 73 years, collectors everywhere will applaud the return of the legendary and revered brand!

Sportkings Series A will retain many of the traditional features of the original Sport Kings but will also bring the brand into the 21st Century featuring state-of-the-art Autograph and Memorabilia Cards.

Each pack will contain 7 cards: 4 Base Cards (three regular size and one vintage size), 1 Autograph Card and 2 additional Insert Cards (autograph or memorabilia).

Production will be extremely limited to only 4,500 packs. Never before has there been a product featuring players of such unparallel quality. Each one of these athletes is a King in their individual sport."

Once you view our checklist you will realize the value and broad appeal of Sportkings Series A.

The autograph list is made up of athletes whose autographs are highly prized and more importantly, all autographs are hard signed.

If you do the math: 4500 packs x 3 base cards a pack = 13500 / 48 cards in the set = 281.25 possible total sets

-Math corrected (3 base cards a pack and not 4)

I think these are going to cost around $400 a pack to start with. One pack makes a box and 3 boxes makes a case. To make a set you would need 5.3 cases (16 packs) at $400. That's $6400 for a 48 card set if you where to get no duplicates. These numbers do not reflect selling the inserts to make up for the base cards. I should note that you would get 12 Autographed Cards and 24 additional Insert Cards (autograph or memorabilia) + 16 Vintage Cards. Who wants some?

Well, considering they're putting themselves in the category with Paradigm, Exquisite and National Treasures, I'd say you're definitely looking at $300 minimum. For that money, you could buy a pack of 1969 Topps. The only difference is you wouldn't feel any guilt opening the Sport Kings pack.

Is it really neccesary to put out such a nice product but to limit production like this? Sounds to me like this is going to be very pricey but for what reason? So everyone can spend ridiculas money trying to get a few cards? Why not produce it like Heritage? I dont like the sounds of this.

I'll just sit and wait while people crack the product open and put together a set of base singles with an occasional insert card for the right price. But, I just like the look of the basic cards and am not willing to dish out that kind of dough for the thrill of 'maybe' pulling something that I'd really like.

If I paid $400 for one pack of these and my auto was Picabo Street, Amanda Beard or Don Carter, I would start shooting people.

            • << <i>Here is some of the info I just got.

              If you do the math: 4500 packs x 4 base cards a pack = 18000 / 48 cards in the set = 375 possible total sets >>

Hi Nascar, I think your math is a little off. Since there are only 3 regular sized cards per pack (i.e. 3 base set cards) that would make the formula:
              4500 packs X 3 base cards a pack = 13500 / 48 cards in the set = 281.25 possible total sets.

I can understand the $400/pack price tag being thrown around. The orginal Sport Kings set is one of the most popular sets in existance. One of the reasons is that there are only 48 cards per set. Each card given the "star" or "king" treatment it deserves. You can't have a mass produced set that only contains 48 base cards, it just won't work. And you can't expand the base set of the Sport King set to be similar to Allen & Ginter because ... welll ... then you would have Allen & Ginter. I think the set will be great and one of the most talked about sets of the year. Why not have a super high quality limited production set every year giving the worlds greatest athletes thier king status. I think it is a formula that will work.

I think limiting the production run will really hurt the product. It's not like there is a "Less Than Premium" option out there for the masses. This is the only product they have to build a base. Limiting it like this will prevent them from even getting into most card shops.

I predict a lot of buzz among hard core collectors (like people on this board). No way casual fans or kids buy this stuff. That being the case, there will be a good initial buzz and hot product on the bay then a couple of years down the road, you'll be able to pick up singles as people move on to the next big thing.
