New PROOF Seated Dollar for my 7070!

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Yes its a proof and its raw. I think this coin was very lightly cleaned at some point, but nevertheless it looks damn nice. In my opinion its a MS 60 details (or Net AU55)
Whatcha think?

Even though it was probably lightly cleaned in the past, I really like the overall look of it for a 7070 set. I do think that is is probably a Proof 58, as there looks to be just a touch of wear on the reverse, but I am certainly no expert.

i like it very much! i would however be worried about that carbon spot eating into the metal on the obverse. maybe NCS can remove it before it does damage?

I like it, cleaned or not. There are some people on this forum who would rather have a dirty, original VF-20 in a slab than a raw MS-60 or PR-60 that was lightly cleaned or wiped. Could it be that lightly cleaned, raw coins with decent eye appeal are actually underrated, representing some of the better values in early US type coins?

On another note, it would make sense for PCGS and NGC to start slabbing these coins as PR-60. The MS-60 and PR-60 grades are practically never used by the services, yet the number of MS-60 and PR-60 pieces potentially available for slabbing is tremendous. There is a need to renew the use of the 60 grade, which is basically reserved for a coin with MS details, but a light cleaning, small scratch, or other mark that prevents a higher grade. People are afraid to submit these coins because they don't want to spend money for slabbing, only to get their coin bagged. Thus, these coins sell raw at a huge discount, or they are pimped as MS-65s in 3rd world slabs.
  • NICE coin, congrats on adding it to your 7070.

  • low grade proofs almost always look to have been "wiped" at some point. I like it!

Thanks for the comments everyone! I got this for a very decent price, so I went for it. Was debating on a trade dollar proof similar to this, but it had too many hairlines so I passed, but this one will do well!

As for that Carbon spot, will a 7070 holder with a slip case & dessicant prevent any further damage caused by it?

My advice is to do nothing about the carbon spot. Attempts to remove it will just result in more hairlines and reduced eye appeal.

Well the coin has been around for almost 150 years, and that carbon spot hasnt done much to it. I will be around for another 70 years at most, so I dont think I need to worry about that spot right now ;-)
