proof set grading

I'm new to the obsession of collecting and wonder if breaking proofs from the case to grade is looked down upon.

Hi, actually lots of people break proofs out. Welcome.
Oh, just to grade them? Or to send them in for grading? As long as the coins are handled and stored properly, that's the main idea - but the more they are handled, the higher is the probability that contamination will make contact with the coins, so be careful.
I knew it would happen.
it out especially if the coins are so-so.
if you find an obvious winner feel free to bust it our for a closer
inspection and possible grading if you desire.
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
On the other hand ivest in poorly designed modern crap and hope for a low mintage....
you better know how to grade like PCGS or NGC does. Any mistakes
and you have ruined your chances to make a profit and will probably
take a loss.
even if you eye is perfect, what if the TPG disagrees? do you send
the coins in again? you only have one shot.
wow. you really need to think this through and discuss any possible
submissions with board members here.
you can throw good money out the window really easy!!

I'm in big trouble then.
I bought a coin recently graded by GEC. The coin is a 1924 S peace dollar and its graded MS67. Its a beautiful coin but I doubt the grade is correct. HOw do you feel about the grading company?? I paid less than $50 for the coin so if it gets a grade from pcgs of 60 grater then I did good. Any comments on regrading???
Grading earlier proof sets (pre- 1970) is not a simple proposition. You have to really know your stuff. But if you do know your stuff you can do very well for yourself. The big key is the understanding of the Cameo and Deep Cameo grades.
Grading current proof sets is kinda like playing the lottery. Just about every coin is going to grade 69 or 70, and frankly I have a real hard time differentiating between the two grades. The only way to come out ahead is with the 70s. In most cases a grade of 69 will not increase the value enough to cover the grading the fees. But if you are lucky and get better than a 33% in the 70 holders it can be a decent payoff.
check what it found.
not a good sign my friend.
please stick with anacs, ngc, and pcgs for now.

He is what is known as a self-slabber. GEC is not even a real grading company, and the material in those holders doesn't come close to the grades assigned. Your 1924-S Peace Dollar is likely a cleaned AU and not worth the $50 you paid for it.
