Do you carry a silver pocket piece?

I have no idea why, but I recently started carrying around a Morgan silver dollar. I guess it's just a reminder of days and times gone by that will never come back in the world of U.S. coins. IMO there is just something magical about the cling of a dollar piece if you flip it. Today's coins just don't have the nice tone that silver makes. Another possible side benefit, is if you happen to get mugged and don't have a lot of money on you, I guess that worthless silver piece could save your life because the mugger might be stupid enough to think they scored big. Lets just hope that nobody ever has to test that theory out though.

So, who carries a silver pocket piece, and why did you start carrying it?

I carry around a 1939 Walker Half as a pocket piece because my grandmother gave it to me years ago.

I carry a 1922 Peace dollar on my keychain. I got it in a bag of bulk silver, and it had a perfect hole drilled in it, so on my kechain it now resides.

I always use a Canadian Silver dollar as a ball marker on the golf course. Common date between 1959 and 1965. Just bullion value, but I always get comments such as 'what kind of coin is that' and 'what is that worth?'
Using an old beat up large cent or worn Victorian quarter is also good for a comment or two.

Yes, a ball marker is easier to spot when it's shiney. Plus, it is a good conversation piece for promoting collecting.

Yes, I carry a 1921 Morgan (it's in my pocket right now). It's big and heavy and makes a great sound when the other change hits it. Around my office we occasionally use it to flip to figure out where we're going for lunch or to settle disputes image

I carry an 1872 Seated Dollar as mine. I love it!

I wanted something to carry that was classic, large, and historical. I have had others over the years, including a 78CC morgan, a Wells Fargo Medal, etc.

I carry a '42 Walker that would grade VF. Like many of you, I carry it to honor a loved one (mother who was born in '42 and surived a tough battle with breast cancer), as a conversation piece and because of the sound it makes when mixed with clad coins.

    Just a few image
    2006 ASE
    1921 Morgan
    1943 Walker
    1964 Kennedy
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

Positive BST: WhiteThunder (x2), Ajaan, onefasttalon, mirabela, Wizard1, cucamongacoin, mccardguy1

    Negative BST: NONE!
  • I carry 2 silver and 1 copper. The silver are....a '43 Walker and a '67 Kennedy. Both were AU but the obverses were totally black. After carring them around they have turned a nice antique look with the highest parts a nice glossy silver and the nooks and crannies still a little dark. The reverses were not black but they have a nice satin effect now.

The copper is an 1850 cent that someone cleaned. It is just now, after about 6 months taking on a more normal color. The cent raises the most interest when someone spots it. They all think it must be worth thousands and I'm crazy to carry it in my pocket.

Yup. A Peace dollar. Can be any common date. I tend to give them away every now and then, normally when they are starting to get a little worn and someone shows more than a passing interest in it.

I have a holed 1803 Half Dollar on my keychain,

I used to have an Off Center Large Cent, Wheat Rev.

I used to carry an AU 1925 Standing Liberty Quarter all the time. That was the year my Dad was born.

For golf, nothing beats a no date 3 cent silver piece as a ball marker.

Great to see so many people carrying around pocket pieces. My wife thought I was crazy until she read this post. As for my piece, it has no personal history to it. I bought a 1921 Morgan because I got it for $10 and it had lots of detail. Hopefully my daughter will continue to be interested in coins, she's 5 right now, and I can pass my pocket piece on to her. Guess someone has to start a tradition, and in this case it's me.

  • I've recently switched to this 1896-O Morgan:

    image

The rim toning is pretty dark, but when you angle it in the light just right, it has some really nice greens and blues and event a hint of russet in it. Haven't figured out how to capture it in my photos yet.

Edited to answer the original question: Why did I start carrying it? A piece of history in my pocket, and not so expensive that if I lost it, I wouldn't be freaking out about it. image

Edited again to update the image and it's filename.

Isn't that a lot of weight in your pockets? That would drive me nuts!

  • I carry a 1998 Silver Eagle. 99% of the people who see it say they have never seen one before. Everyone finds it beautiful and interesting. It had some scratches, so I just started putting it in my pocket. Now the scratches are mostly gone as is a slight layer of the coin's surface. When people comment on how big and heavy it is I tell them it keeps me from floating away because I am so light. (I'm pretty hefty.)

I stopped carrying a big keychain with 20 keys that I didn't need (stays in briefcase for work) so even with the coins I have a lighter load image The ASE is scratched, so I started carrying it because I like the ASE. At the time I figured it was only worth melt which was about $7.00.

I "cherrypicked" a circulated 1959 Mexican peso from a $.50 bin at a coin show. it's an approx. U.S. Half Dollar sized coin with lettering on the edge and a classic design. I think it's around 0.100 silver or something hilariously low like that. Still has enough silver for the classic "RING" noise, but it's wearing down very very slowly.
