Why does the post office offer insurance when you request their services to deliver a package?

The post office is not responsible for loss, unless insurance is purchased. They have a very high success rate in delivering goods, but it is not 100%, and they offer insurance to the shipper in the case something does happen. It is the shipper's insurance, and the post office is only responsible if insurance is purchased.

If you purchase anything online, it is the seller's responsibility that you get the item safely -- eBay or otherwise. Until the item is in the buyer's hands safely, it is not the buyer's item.
