What would you do?

If this coin was yours, would you leave it in the Anacs plastic? Would you crack it and submitt it to PCGS or would you leave it in the plastic and try to cross it?

Crack it. Looks like it would at least go back into the ANACS plastic if it didnt work at PCGS.

If it weren't a VAM, the obvious answer would be leave it as is since it's a common date that wouldn't be worth much. Since it is a VAM, what's the value, and is there a significant difference in that value between ANACS and PCGS?

Might be tough to get into a PCGS 65 depending on how the hits on the forehead, neck and cheek look in hand. Does appear to be some chatter on REV.

    Luster looks good from picture

I don't know about VAMs, but aren't most grading firms a little tougher with variety coins?

Good questions Russ. I'm not a Vam guy, maybe some of the Vam guys could answer that. Is there any chance this coin would ever go 66? The surfaces are pretty mark free, and the luster is fabulous.

That looks like a 65 to me. Would a specialist collector really care whethter it was in PCGS plastic or not?

who care, when ANACS is a reputable company, i wouldn't sweat it. now if it were a 3rd world slab and you wanted it in PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG that is a different story

BTW, I thought I read somwhere that this VAM is fairly common at 64 and below, but starts to get a little more scarce in GEM and above.

Excellent point as well as Russ'

From a dealer's standpoint, the obvious is to maximize profit.
From a collectors standpoint, the obvious is to have a desired piece.
I like the piece, but I have this thing for how plastic fits into a BLUE BOX.

Here is a PCGS 65 1888 (not a vam11 though) on Ebay, in an OGH for comparision. I would say that my coin is overall, cleaner and has better luster.

Leave it where its at. I doubt it would make it into a PCGS MS65 slab.

Truth is, unless you are playing the registry game for VAM's...either plastic is acceptable and the premium margin is very small in regards to the VAM.

I believe it would cross, most of my best looking Morgans are in Anacs holders btw.
    Prost!

    I like it as a 66 or easily a 65+.
  • Leave it.
