But thanks for reminding me of that ... I thought their new slogan was pretty funny

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

  • I would probally disagree. Most of the tough coins seem to end up at Heritage Signature auctions. I have several sets mostly early proof sets and early mint set. I calculated the percentages: Teletrade 17%, Heritage 64%, the rest is from Ebay, other internet auctions, or coin shows, etc. 19%.image

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there?

But actually, I guess I'd have to say... it depends on what series of coins you're putting together. In Jeffersons, they tend to have some possibilities from time to time... Heritage (and most of the other auction top dog websites) don't seem to have very many top coins from the late date series... most I see are either on Teletrade or the Bay of E.

I realize this is a very minute area... and those that look for the big coins (so far out of my price range the title of my house wouldn't touch them) might disagree, but I've had some luck using Teletrade...

    Hope this helps!

I laugh every time I see that banner. The only real difference between Teletrade and eBay is that Teletrade requires the crap coins to be in slabs.

Bruce what prompts this subject? Are they saying that? I have got a coin or 2 maybe from them and know a lot of modern registry type stuff is available there...but the statement is probably a big stretch even for moderns in my opinion..

That is a quote from their banner ad at PCGS and NGC. I have a few top Registry sets and have never bought a coin from Teletrade - I was just wondering if their claim is true or not.

I believe Teletrade is the leading auction site to sell top pops in selected modern Registry sets. For example, modern Proof Gold Eagles or Proof Ike Dollars, where Teletrade has obtained the highest price levels of any auction venue I am aware of. Obviously, their assertion has nothing to do with classic coin sets (best I know). Which brings me to this thought - if their core auction business is truly (great) modern registry set building, then why not (proudly) clearly state that?

I can never remember my password at teletrade to ever bid on anything there.

They always seem to change my password!

Actually six coins from my roosie set DID come from Teletrade -- think it was during the early 1990s, but my memory is fuzzy...

It depends on your definition of finest.

I have bought many coins from Teletrade and some have ended up in my two highest graded Registry sets.

For instance, my SBA set is the highest graded, but calling it one of the "Finest Registry Sets" would be a HUGE stretch in my opinion.

I don't think that the truly finest sets in the hobby were built from Teletrade auctions....Your's for instance!

I have never bought from teletrade; maybe thats why I only have one #1 ranked registry set!

Don't be modest DRG your #1 SBA circ set is definitely one of the "finest" all are pop tops. I have enjoyed watching you build the set!

The finest sets are built by hard work from the collector, and/or a dealer-agent, that search out the coins needed from any and all possible hiding places.

Teletrade? One respected member of these boards refers to them as Teletrash. Perhaps a bit harsh, but...

  • Out of curiosity, I just checked my Morgan Dollar Top 100 VAM set (ranked #2), and I counted 47 entries were won on EBAY, 20 entries were won on Heritage auctions, and 11 were won on Teletrade auctions (the rest from other sources)

To the extent that 70s matter in the modern sets, Teletrade does seem to be the place to go.

I used to have the #1 Indian Half Eagle set and 2 or 3 of the coins came from Teletrade. They were just fillers but still...

Not one of my barber halves was purchased by me from TeleTrade. In fact, I've never bought anything via TT. I do buy occasional coins from eBay.

...and the sets with the most 70s are usually the finest quality sets. Obviously.

As far as classics go TT dried up in the mid to late 1990's. I purchased a couple of top coins back then but still paid a lot for them. One of them was an 1853 NA 25c in ogh PCGS MS66 holder.
I sold the coin a year or so ago and it undoubtedly resides in a 67 holder today. These days TT is not a viable source for classics.
Any classic I have bought since 1998 and later has ended being a break even at best possibility. And these days I would say you cannot possibly beat them on a classic type coin.
