hmmm, I never said I was ignorant of how Blockbuster works, can you please fill me in on where I said that?

I've used both, blockbuster sucks every time I have tried them out, netflix has not.

your first post in this thread indicated your ignorance..

    hence, ignorance..

right, so you have to go buy some extra cables to run from your computer to your TV to be able to watch free netflix movies on your TV..

no thanks.. ill stick with my free DVD's from blockbuster, and not stretch cables across my floor..

Man, it is always something with you. Monster S-video cables are available on ebay with a BIN for as little as $10 with shipping.

First you do not like waiting for movies in the mail,

then you do not like watching movies on your computer

now you do not want cables on your floor??? is your TV wireless? Mine has quite a few cables but maybe you have no cables anywhere. That would be cool, I must say.

come on pandrews I think that you and I both know, with the evidence provided in this lengthy thread, that Netflix offers more movies for your dollar. Bottom line.

did i say that? i dont think i did, hell, i use Blockbuster Online, I get movies in the mail and i dont mind waiting.. but i like the extra free DVD's they give me too..

<< <i>then you do not like watching movies on your computer >>

    this is correct

<< <i>now you do not want cables on your floor??? is your TV wireless? Mine has quite a few cables but maybe you have no cables anywhere. That would be cool, I must say. >>

yes, i do not have any cables stretched across my living room floor or my bedroom floor..

no, i dont see that.. i see that if i want to watch Netflix and their free Youtube videos, I have to buy a cable and run it from a computer to my TV.. thats not convenient.. give me DVD's..

    yes.

you claimed ignorance by saying you didnt know video rental stores still do business, said you havent been inside one in 3+ years.

"How is this possible when you can watch over 2,000 movies and tv shows, from Netflix's website, "

    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This is easy to do for ALL of US.

But, it is out of the question for the vast majority of folks who
rent movies. A fine/fun feature for techies, but worth nada
    to the largest demographic.

The quality of the nflx streaming movies on high-end TV sets
is TOTALLY excellent. Few folks want to watch movies on
their computers; some do, MOST do not. The cables and speakers
    required to best enjoy the streaming feature are inexpensive;
but most folks are not even aware that they exist. OTOH, the
term "inexpensive" is a relative one. For about $100.00, a nice
hidden-installation (no cables on the floor) can be done. That
$100.00 is alot of money to some of the rental demographic.
Also, non-OEM video-cards are often needed to make the stream
the best that it can be; more money that most folks cannot pay.

The nflx VOD is a value-added feature for some folks, but BBI's
"free movies in hand" is clearly a more useful cash-saver for most
of the current working and retired customer base.

Another thing to note is that BBI currently loses money on TA.
They need another $1 or $2 to make money on the scheme. If
they start to charge that extra amount, some customers will
    drop out.

I rent, burn em, pay late fees, as it was my fault I didnt follow the rules and there probally is a better way but who really gives a Black Box. Im worried about that poor Hilton girls well being. lol

    Carry on...

    //////////////////////////////////////

I was worried about making it obvious to the peasants that
there are two justice systems in America. Now, I am not as
    worried about that.

PH could have been a hero, by doing a couple of weeks. Her
CS conduct is just another exposition of her poor judgement.

I still like her, but she needs to sit in the cell for a bit and try
to get in touch with the same reality that most other Americans
    have to deal with.

There is a time to leave childish things behind. That, of course,
does not apply to trading cards.

i've known about your sarcasm all along, just as i recognize your extreme ignorance.. just as your smart-ass "pandrews, you are the only smart witty individual here, geez" comment was sarcastic, and i let it slide without saying anything..

machismo? your sarcastic comments wreak of machismo and arrogance, and a refusal to admit you may be wrong about blockbuster, considering you havent used them or stepped foot inside in 3+ years..

ive outlined facts, and clearly admitted there are things i didnt know about, such as netflix providing videos you can watch on your computer.. unfortunately it just doesnt interest me to watch movies on my computer.

even you latest post is ignorant.

This is a great debate that actually carries more significance than just a Netflix vs. Bbuster comparison.

The future in movie rentals is obviously internet VOD and with the release of media PCs this will become more prevalent in the near future. Some are out now but expensive. Soon we'll see a PC dedicated to your movie viewing, DVR, MP3 and other audio files that will take the place of your normal audio components, at least for most regular users. Once the price comes down we'll all have one in the living room. Sure you can do it today but most need a more efficient user friendly method to make it attractive. Hey, if you're wireless in the home and have gone "all laptop" there is nothing stopping you from interfacing with the TV except an S cable.

Which brings about the thought of competition. What will rule; VOD, On Demand Cable, or DVD rental? Someone will have to make the price low enough to compete or some will change to the most attractive format. The stage has been set with monthly rental fees for Netflix and Bbuster. Cable is pretty unwilling to come down in price. I look forward to paying $15 a month and viewing movies at any time without the disc.

I agree phillyfan, a few years ago when I bought my house and got a DVR with my service. Now after using it a couple of years, I do not know what I did without it. I can take as long in the bathroom as I want, I can skip commercials, I can watch primetime shows at two in the morning. It is the greatest thing ever.

Then a year ago, I hooked up HD TV and I can not stand the TVs in the house without it now. The media companies can not gouge the customer like they used to and have a lot of competition. A lot of the new computers out there have screens that are clearer than a lot of TVs and are great media outlets.

Even if you do not have a DVR, a lot of the TV stations are supplying their TV shows on their website to watch. Not to mention the impact Apple with Itunes and Ipods are having on the media world.

The same with music, I do not have to carry a big book of CDs in my car anymore, all I do is hook up my MP3 and I have thousands upon thousands of songs to choose from. I no longer need to purchase CD's, i can download songs or burn someone elses CD onto my computer.

I look forward to the advancement of technology that is yet to come.

oh and Paris should be shot out of a cannon to join the cast of Lost on a remote island in the middle of nowhere with no communciatin with the outside world!!!

Why would I go back to a place that every single time(used them 3 times over the years) they screwed something up, overcharged me on late fees, and were generally unpleasant to deal with???

No one else has a problem understanding my posts in this thread other than you and yet I'm the ignorant one and the smart*ss? I won't call you the same, but come on guy, do you really not understand my point?

The announcement is likely to come soon.

  • I think colebear you are in the minority....

The general public wants, no needs something in hand, that is why the disk service is in such high demand....

I misunderstood the arguement and did not realize it included the VOD service. Many more households have DVD then Media PC's hooked up to the TV.....

A great example of how well blockbuster works is my grandmother. At 92 she lives in NYC (Queens actually) and has Blockbuster TA. She sat with us and we loaded her Que for here and she continues to get great movies she wants and she know how to use her DVD player. During the summer or when it is nice out and she wants to take a walk she can walk to the blockbuster on the corner and get some "face time" with people (you know old folks and how they like to walk around shops). She can pick out another movie she wants AND she makes a list for my mother or cousin or us of movies she saw that we add to her que. IT is a nice way for Grandma to get out of the house for 2 hours and feel like she did something. And a free movie to boot (you know old folks and how they like free stuff)....

    So in review....

    For Streaming Video...Netflicks,

    More DVD movies per month...Blockbuster

    Fun ranking numbers from alexa.com

    Yesterday's Rank

    Yahoo #1
    Wikipedia # 9
    EBAY # 19

    ////////////////////////////////////////

    NFLX # 547

    BBI # 1252

About 99% of visitors to both sites go for only two-reasons:

    1. Join.

    2. Manage Que/Order. (We do not know how many are
downloading from NFLX, but since the tech is not widely
accepted, we can guess that it is relatively few.)

With 6M+ subscribers, we could expect that NFLX traffic
would be much higher than it is, relative to BBI. This may
mean that the BBI commercials are recruiting alot of
    new members.

I was bored and found this on YAHOO.

BlockBuster has a new price scheme to undercut Netflix.
    The new plan is for folks who do not want to go to the store;
three-movies out at once, for less cash than nflx. Also, you
can get 2 movies in the mail and one from the store for $4.99
a month - that might even work for folks like me.

Price Wars are good, unless one of the players gets killed off.

(Adds analyst downgrade, and NBC-Universal deal with Netflix)

    By Gina Keating

LOS ANGELES, June 12 (Reuters) - Blockbuster Inc. (BBI) introduced on Tuesday an Internet-only DVD rental service priced below a similar Netflix plan, sending Netflix shares down 9 percent as the online movie rental war heated up again.

Citigroup downgraded Netflix shares to "sell" from "hold" after its rival's announcement, citing competitive pressures.

Also on Tuesday, Netflix Inc. (NFLX) said it would launch on its Web site this year a series, "I Love This Movie!", about classic movies. The two- to three-minute episodes are part of three series to be produced by NBC Universal Digital Studios.

Shares of Blockbuster, the No. 1 video rental store chain, fell nearly 2 percent after it rolled out the new unlimited three-DVDs-out-at-a-time plan at $16.99 -- $1 cheaper than Netflix's most popular plan.

The two have been battling over the fast-growing online DVD rental market since 2004, when Blockbuster launched its online rental service to compensate for falling store rental revenue.

The cheapest Blockbuster By Mail plan will now start at $4.99 for two rentals per month -- the same as Netflix's lowest-priced plan. Blockbuster sweetened the deal with one coupon for a free in-store movie or game rental per month.

The new prices apply only to Blockbuster by Mail to differentiate it from the Total Access plan, which gives online subscribers free in-store rentals when they exchange DVDs at Blockbuster stores.

The Blockbuster By Mail plans lets subscribers cut the time between DVD deliveries by allowing them to return DVDs in stores, but does not provide free in-store rentals.

Citigroup analyst Tony Wible said the price cuts would make it significantly tougher for Netflix to sustain earnings.

"We expect that Netflix will eventually have to match the price cuts or lose significant share to Blockbuster," he said.

A Netflix spokesman could not be reached immediately for comment.

Earlier this year, Netflix struck back at Total Access by adding a free Instant Viewing feature to its Web site that lets subscribers watch an unlimited number of streamed movies.

Blockbuster has been losing money since launching Total Access late last year, but the plan has led to an increase in its market share at Netflix's expense.

Blockbuster had 3 million subscribers as of April 1, and projected on Tuesday that the online rental market would grow by 43 percent this year.

Netflix said in April it reached 6.8 million subscribers but cut its year-end subscriber forecast to 7.3 million to 7.8 million from its January outlook of 8 million to 8.4 million.

Netflix saw its shares buoyed as much as 15 percent this week by market speculation that online retailer Amazon.com Inc (AMZN) would buy it. Both companies declined to comment.

JP Morgan analyst Barton Crockett said in a note to clients on Tuesday the new price scheme does not exclude a later price hike for Total Access plans. He said the company maintained its forecast for a $170 million investment in Total Access and said it would not spend more to promote the new prices.

Crockett, who downgraded Netflix shares on Monday, said the move was "negative for Netflix."

Shares of Netflix were down 8.8 percent, or $1.93, at a three-month low of $20.00 in late Nasdaq trade. Blockbuster was down 7 cents at $4.00 on the New York Stock Exchange.
