Weekly 1979 OPC Wax Box Rip 2 days early

I won't be home this friday for my weekly rip so I ordered a little earlier and the ups man brought me two boxes of 1979 OPC today. These boxes aren't quite as clean as the others, and I'm worried about one row of packs because it looks like the box was dropped, but we will see shortly. I'll do scans of the highlights for each third of the box, unless there are no highlights.

  • Sorry it took so long guys I had to eat something before I started the rip, here are the highlights from the first 12 packs. I opened all the packs on the dinged corner side first and amazingly all the cards were fine. I had two packs where 9 out of 10 cards were centered almost perfectly, the other card in pack 1 was the Seaver below, and in pack 2 it was the Brett, what are the odds of that.

  • 24 packs down, and here are the highlights from round 2. The Winfield sure looks nice, but unfotunately it has one flaw I don't think I could sneak by the graders.

So, in 2 packs with perfectly centered cards the only 2 off centered cards were Seaver and Brett. And then 4 more hall of famers end up with stuck gum. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
  • Here is the third and final installment of pictures for the first box. Second box coming soon.

  • Well guys I'm about a third of the way through the second box and so far nothing noteworth other than 3 more gum loving Hall of Famers. I'll post second box highlights in the morning.
  • As promised, here are the highlights of the second box. All in all a pretty good box. I think this will be the last installment of the 1979 OPC journey, I'll have to try something new next week just to give everyone a little variety.

  • Mike, I tried the freezer thing on a common, but the gum is just stuck to good and won't pop off without some paper. I did find that if I use a hair dryer I can get the gum to peel off without paper loss, but the card feels a little rough where the gum was, you can't see where it was but if you run your finger over it you can feel a little bit of grit. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the grit without damaging the card? Any advice would be great.
  • Just curious what the boxes set you back price wise?
  • Love the rips and pics. But I have to say. I think it's kinda funny that you include Don Money in your scans.

The Don Money cards were the best centered cards in my box as well.
  • Hotmush, they were just centered so well, plus it seemed like I pulled a Don Money out of every other pack, well maybe not that many but it was close to four a box.

Okay - so I too purchased two wax boxes from BBC - and I've cracked one so far. How do I seperate the gum stuck on the cards - I remember someone mentioning freezing them. Also - I'm not having major centering problems, but the edges are horrible. Is it possible to get a '79 OPC with four sharp edges? And does PSA give any sort of grading curve for these bad boys?

Thats easy, just start chewing on the card and the gum and your saliva should separate them for you.

PSA does not count the rough edge against the grade of the card.

Thank you both - I will try the saliva removal method tonight!

Where's the panty hose guys when you need them. Rubbing panty hose over the gum can sometimes remove the gum, although it works much better on the front shiny side than the back side.

So I went through the second box today - and I'm really pleased, other than a few HOF cards with a sweet piece of 30-yr-old gum stuck to them. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Nice Ozzie, much better than the ones I pulled. Looks like overall you got the best centered cards out of the whole case.
  • Big80sBig80s Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭
Thank you - I do feel fortunate considering how tough these cards are. I had no idea the OPC's were so poorly produced until I began opening these. Even the PSA 9's I'm seeing on eBay have rough edges. But all in all, I'm really happy with the two boxes, especially the second one I opened today.

Wow, those are some sweet pulls. The Ozzie has a shot at a PSA 9, IMO.

That was definitely cool to watch .
    Thank you .
Box rippin on the forum . . . Man , How can ya top that ?
I would try freezing again , But them things might have been through almost 3 decades of hot cold /hot cold temps , maybe even a little humditity .
I've frozen them and quick pop it out of the freezer, I hold it on the sides and give it one of those patented thumb and middle finger flicks . . . . . POOP ! right off .
I make sure that gum is good and frozen .
Thanks again for sharing that guys .

TNTonPMS - thank you for the advice - I'm trying a couple different methods right now, but I think a hair dryer is working best so far. And I completely agree, it's really fun to see scans from a newly opened box. It's second best to opening them yourself.

And yes - the Ozzie is pretty darn sweet - I don't really want to get my hopes up on submitting it though - it might pull an 8, but I would love to have a 9. We'll see - I might send it in this week along with the Ryan.

I was going to say that too . . . it's almost like I was opening them with ya's . . . Only thing is I don't get to keep em . image
    But still very cool .
I think I might look for an old box of cards and try that one day, Just had too much fun with that one .

Now there were a lot of really nicely centered 79s! The Ozzie Smith Rookie is great! Good luck on that one! I am hoping my box comes later today or tomorrow at the latest. I ordered mine from BBCE and requested I get the box with the psa 10 Ozzie Rookie image I have seen slight tilts get 10s so I hope yours makes the grade!

Yankeeno7 - I'm hoping you'll share with us all how that box comes out! Some scans are always a nice addition to a thread. Good luck on the box break! I ordered another box myself. At $180/each, I think it's a steal.

Check out on the community thread! Break was done and all cards were posted. Enjoy!

And I want to thank HA for getting my butt in gear to pop for a box! It was the last or one of the last that BBCE had. I agree, 180 was a great price.

That was a fun break to watch too! Man, pack for pack! That Winfield is sweet, too. I've been looking at lots of 8's & 9's on eBay and they don't take off for the rough edges at all as long as the centering is good and the corners are good. for example...

I am so frusterated right now. I was really excited about submitting the card I pulled from those two boxes - you guys all saw my scan - same day as I pulled it - and I sent it into PSA. Got Evidence of Trimming. What do I do - waste more money and resubmit it?
