1979 OPC Ozzie Smith - What would you grade it?

Snow is on the scanner... PSA says EVID TRIM, sold to me as pack fresh. The top right corner looks odd but I've seen OPC like that, there is no sign of trimming to me. What do you guys think? Worth sending back on the $13 "special"?

It looks trimmed. That top right edge is way too funny looking.
Where did all the rough edge go since it's an OPC?

Top right looks trimmed to the naked eye, so I doubt PSA will holder it if you send it again. OPC cards are usually cut rough, not wavy like that one. Just my 2 cents.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • top right edge, noticed it without even reading anyone elses post. looks messed with
  • That top right corner does look like it may have been trimmed. But as far as no rough edges go, I have recently opened 2 boxes of 79 OPC and pulled probably 15 cards total that had no rough edges, but if compared to one with rough edges they are just a little bit smaller so that may be be the cause of the evidence of trimming. How does it compare to your other OPC's?

This is the only 79 OPC card I have so I don't have any to compare to. Other OPC from 1980 up that I have are similar (no rough edge) but they don't have a corner like that. Some of the non-rough ones came back with 8's and 9's a few others came back EVID TRIM and another came back MINSIZERQ. I had a 1989 OPC Ozzie Smith come back EVID TRIM, who would trim that?

I have a 78 munson opc that is bvg 9 and no rough edges and also some 72 opc cards that are 8s that don't have the rough edges.

OPC cards were cut with a sharp wire, the wire would get dull and the edges would get rough. If you get cards cut when the wires were newer you get sharper edges. They were much more concerned with production numbers than quality control, so centering and edge quality weren't as important.

I'm wondering if the Ozzie Smith card is part of an uncut sheet rather than trimmed. It's not that often you see one centered that well with good edges too.

Possible that card is a sheet cut?

Not sure if the top right has been messed with or not, looks to me like the card is just tilted on all side, just like most Topps cards from that year, IMO.
  • Thanks gain for all the responses. I should have asked before I sent it in the first time.

The overwhelming consensus is that there is something horribly wrong with it, trimmed, sheet cut, etc. So, there's no sense in wasting $13 more on it. Needless to say I wasn't happy when it first arrived in the mail, I should have tried to get my money back then. I was hopeful though.

    Anyone want to buy it?

Anyone have a decent one that they would like to sell? I would like one that would grade 7 or above.

Should I take my chances with a box of 1979 OPC from BBCE instead of buying raw cards?

I would say for the money, just find yourself a nice psa 7 or psa 8 on ebay and buy that instead of monkeying around. Unless of course you want to have fun opening packs but buying raw could continue a search that leads you into wasting more of your hard earned money.

Agreed, especially since a nice 8 won't cost you an arm and a leg. The only problem is they don't come up that often.

I have owned several of these cards. I currently have 1 in PSA 9. I believe this card to be sheet cut. The borders are the correct length but the top right corner shows where the cuttter may have slipped. Unfortunately, I believe this is an authentic card, but not factory cut.

Here is my card with very little "opc rough cut" for comparison.
