What to buy with extra $250

I'm looking for a good solid coin in the range of 200-300. Any ideas of what I might want to look for? I just want to make sure the coin I purchase looks good. I don't want to just buy it b/c it falls in my price range.

    Gold, gold is always good!

Collect raw morgans, walkers, mercs, SLQ, barber q. Looking at getting into earlier date coins pre 1900s.

No real preference for this coin, I just want to stay away from dimes nickels and quarters.

    That is the question ...

you can pick up a nice AU or better coin for that range from a variety of series dating back to the 19th Century

A Choice AU (AU55 to AU58) to Nice Unc (MS63) from the following series can be had, even a "better date" if you stay in the AU grades

    Shield Nickel
    Seated Dime
    Seated Quarter
    Liberty Nickel
    Barber Dime
    Barber Quarter

Like the early 20 Century Classics? How about a better date, near Gem Mercury Dime or Walker? Or maybe a Choice Unc Standing Liberty?

Heck, $250. will buy a lot of coin if you think about it and look around image

editted to add - now he says he wants to stay away from nickels, dimes and quartersimage

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

1921 Peace Dollar (PCGS AU58...most of them have nicer eye appeal than the MS60 because of the luster).... great value for the money and a coin that is highly sought after by many collectors.

OK, looked back through your posts since you've been here. Looks like you're a copper fan mostly.

Personally, I'd stick with something certified, and as high a grade as possible. there are plenty of coins for $200-300, just a few possibilities:

    An MS Braided Hair cent
Low - Mid MS common Indian Heads
    1909s Lincoln - Low MS

If you narrow it down to one series, and rough condition you want, that will narrow down the years, then do a wanted to buy ad in the BST and see what gets offered to you.

Buy an 1840's half eagle from the Philly Mint. Cheap, old, and cool!

I've found out, in the last month moreso....

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Anaconda coins make me smile. That's what it's all about, baby.

Are you looking for a "good, solid coin" in your words, to hold on to long term? Or are you simply looking to hold on to short term? Your answer makes a huge difference to those who may respond. Timing is everything & a very important factor in your investment strategy.

I would buy the nicest, dirty draped bust half that I could for $250.

Agree. A nice Liberty half eagle from the 1880's would be a good choice. Should be able to buy one in a top tier slab for $250.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
