Politics meets the coin collection

RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
I do not want to get into a discussion of politics here. There are plenty of other places for that, and I am generally not politically active. However, I did recently an invitation to a Presidential fund raiser for my favorite candidate (who shall remain nameless, for the purpose of this discussion). The cost for admission at the highest level, which includes co-sponsorship of the event, a photo shoot and individual meeting with the candidate, and the opportunity to rub elbows with the likes of which only Longacre gets to schmooze.

Sounds fun so far, but here's the kicker. The cost of the event is exactly what I paid for my last XF Dahlonega $5 (pictured below). image Money being a finite commodity, if I go to the event, I might have to pass on the next XF Dahlonega $5 that gets tossed my way. My inclination is to skip the event, unless they will take SAE Anniversary sets as a contribution image .

Any guidance or advice appreciated.

Better to buy several local politicians for the same money.

Politicians are like bananas. After you buy them, you find out some are rotten inside. The last politician we bought turned out to be worse than his predecessor.

  • save your money. all politicians regardless of party or belief are ROLLING in cash from big money donors, bribes, lobbiests et. al.

take the money you were going to give the windbag and give it to your local food bank. they will do more good with it than any politician would do with 100 times the amount.

If voting could actually enact a change back to a free country, voting would be declared illegal.

    Skip it, by the coin.

Unless you need the political juice for business reasons, better to save your money - taxes are going up for folks in your bracket very shortly image
  • You can have your cake and eat it too with my advice. Don't go to this expensive top shelf fundraiser. There will be many other fundraisers for this candidate if you keep informed about the candidacy by signing up for their email. Wait for a fundraiser with a much lower entry price. Some of the state or local officials will probably host an event at some time. Use the difference to buy that coin! And in the end you have gone to a fundraiser to help the candidate of your choice too.

    Get real!

Save the money for a coin, that way you will have something for your hard earned money. Four years down the road there will be someone else asking for money. If you don't want to buy the coin, buy something for the wife - or mistress, which ever the case, you will get more out of the money that way.image

I'd go if you think he has a good chance of winning, staying in office for a long time and can steer things like 1974 aluminum cents to you image

Edited to say: Oops, just read this is for a Presidential candidate. They don't seem to have a good track record of walking off with Mint pieces so scratch that.

If by going to this event you can, in the long run, make some money, then you should go. If you have no ntention of rubbing elbows in order to attain some financal gain, then you are better off buying the coin. JMHO

I don't care for politics, even after being forced into it as of lately.

At that price,I'd say,buy another coin.

Funny how people pay big money to eat with a politician, back in the early 90's I was invited to a BBQ event at Fred Thompson's when he was running for senate, cost nothing to go, Thompson paid for the BBQ out of his own pocket, it was pretty much an open event that anyone could attend. Never heard one person ask for a dime and never saw anyone writting a check. To bad more politicians don't reach in their own pockets for these events.

I received one offering, among other options, a table for eight at 25,000. Now if I can only get the other seven people in my group to chip in their 5,000 per seat.image

I will let Hillary know that you cannot attend the next time I see her. I think you should save the money and buy the coin, and leave the high powered schmoozing to Longacre. image

Meeting a candidate, rubbing elbows with 'elite', photo ops.. these are all to stroke YOUR ego and take your cash. If you are comfortable with yourself and do not need 'status symbols' to support who you think you are, then buy the coin - there will be zero value returned for contributions to the candidate. Cheers, RickO

Well since you are faced with such a dilemma, my suggestion would be to fast for three days, pray the Lord's Prayer and be cheerful. Many people in the world do not have the kind of money it takes to buy Dahlonega gold image.

Ooops, I didn't mean to bring religion here, either image

Hmmm... I wonder if it is the same cadidate for which I recently received an invite. Is the event being held June 8th for $2,300 a head, or 1000 buck if you just want adult beverages? I say save you money for the big July show in St. Chuck image

BBG...you nailed it. image I was not planning on going, but I thought that it was interesting that I immediately converted the donation amount to its value in coins to me. I would much rather have another XF Dahlonega $5 than listen to some blow-hard and schmooze with some of the folks in the Longacre class. image

Same here. The only reason why I would consider going is to maybe drum up some business. You never know, maybe one of the attendees has a fresh Dahlonega gold collection left to them from a wealthy banker grandfather who was a collector. Oh... wouldn't that be nice!
