Atrocious 2007 MS69 First Strike ASEs

After all of this talk about milk spots. I thought i better take a look at my ASEs. Luckily my big buck 2006 FS Anniv. were all OK.
But...One of the raw 06s (uncirculated one) had spots the day i opened it. I had bought this in a group of 5 sets unopened (darn). But 2 days after i got them i had to look. So today i remembered buying a bunch of 2007 FS 69s ( 3 sets of 20) one from savoncoin and 2 from gradycoins. Dumb me did not open them. So today i did. The 2 sets from Chris were perfect. The set from savoncoin was crap. i mean every single coin was crap. And I am not talking about milk spots, although nearly all had the spots. No, these were just sorry excuses for coins. Every single coin has some flaw on the sun (obverse lower left). One has some ridiculous anomaly across the middle of the coin. How could these be 69s? I looked closely with a loupe and these seem to be flaws in the silver. My fault for not looking until now. But still. Why would this guy even send them to PCGS? And how could they be 69s?

The spots probably formed after they were holdered. What kind of environment did you store them in?

What type of environment should we be storing them in? I kept mine in air-conditioned environment in pcgs blue boxes. I live in Florida. image

  • they were shipped and stored in PCGS blue boxes indoors. I live in Scottsdale, AZ. It is very dry here, year round. All 3 boxes were stored in the same place in a desk drawer.

savoncoin is located in Laguna Beach CA...near the Ocean. I've been told, but don't know if it's correct: "Folks living near the Ocean are more prone to environmental coin damage." Perhaps keeping the slabs in Intercept Shield Holders is the answer.

I've been using Food Saver vacuum sealed bags for years.

All my ASE's are mint fresh, no spots, mo milking, etc....

The ASE sets were sealed the day I received them.

  • I keep all of my ASE 20th Anniversary coins in Intercept Shield boxes. They are pricey, but well worth the extra investment.

Intercept Shields are used to protect the slab, they are still exposed to the environment, slabs are not airtite.

I've got ASE's that have been sealed for 5 years, no spots, haze, milking, etc...........

I contacted Food Saver, and spoke with a rep, she stated there is no PVC used in manufacturing the bags.

i live in Mesa a few miles from you, but can't comment because our weather is so much different image seriously though, I use the Intercept Shield 'track box' that has the internal dividers intended to house PCGS and NGC slabs. they work great, and aren't much more than normal plastic PCGS or NGC boxes (around $13). you may want to give them a shot
  • Thanks morgansforever...sounds like you might have a winner. Maybe a great answer
  • thanks everybody. not sure what i am going to do with those ugly ones. these 2007s were the only ones i had in blue boxes.
