Jeter is one of the best shortstops to play the game. Sure, hated as a Yankee and not an Ozzie Smith in the field. He's the CURRENT leader of the best baseball team in the history of the game.

Morgmeister - tip one up. If you think Mazerowski was good, I agree. But Jeter far surpasses him and his "home run."

I never mentioned Mazeroski and you said that Jeter is the current leader of the best baseball team in the history of the game. Either you meant to say franchise or you've forgotten alot better teams in your time.

  • For someone who can't field (image Jeter made the best damn defensive play I've seen in my lifetime...

  • << <i>Is Jeter the worst defensive shortstop in the major leagues? >>

Is this the dumbest question I've ever seen on these boards?
  • the vitriol is sure flying now lol.

Jeter is a great player and an above average fielder. He plays hard and has great hustle. Does he deserve 3 gold gloves? no way. They tend to hand those out to OFFENSIVE minded players rather than truly rewarding the best defensive SS et.al at the respective positions.

I'm a Mets fan here in NY, but I have to admit that Jeter is a special player, and will be a first ballot lock for the HOF when all is said and done.

    agreed, I still hate him.
  • When all is said and done Jeter will break all kinds of Yankee records and some Major League records too. If Jeter stays healthy he will be the first player to get 3,000 Yankee hits. Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle never accomplished this feat in their HOF careers. All Major League teams would love to have this guy.

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
  • THIS is why most guys on this board (who aren't Yankee fans--and there are alot of us guys), post when there is some Derek Jeter talk--you compare him to Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle?!?!?!?
Yes, he'll probably get 3000 hits but NO, there isn't a GM alive or dead who would take Jeter over ANY of those 4--he's not in the same league, stop comparing him to them!!! Is he a great Yankee?--YES? Is he the best who ever lived?--not even CLOSE! And 3000 hits is very impressive, I'm not knocking him, but he's not God, and he hasn't won a damn thing in 7 seasons! Now let the blasting begin, I'm due.

  • you compare him to Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle?!?!?!?

When a player is going to surpass another player and break a team record it is the logical thing to do.

and he hasn't won a damn thing in 7 seasons

Poor Derek Jeter I feel so sorry for him. He will probably cry at the end of the season when it is the first time he hasn't made the post season in his career. image 10 AL East Championships, 6 pennants, and 4 World Series rings in 11 seasons is just not good enough for Jeter.

How many post season appearances did the Expos make in their 36 year existence?

    Holy Cow.....
    First ballot HOF, no doubt.
Yes, not Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, DiMag, Gehrig or Mantle.
Best all around player in his position in his era.
Captain of 4 WS Teams, multiple accolades to boot.
Hated by cry babies who wish he was on thier team, or stupid.

Toyboy - get a life. You're just a hater. Joe Carter, et al was many moons ago. Yeah - stick to hockey lore about great teams because you ain't got one to root for in baseball.

BobFettacheese - you don't have a clue. Thanks for weighing in with your cheesy expertise. In the last 20 years, the AL Gold Glove at Shortstop has been dominated by MANY fair offensive players such as Mark Belanger, Rick Burleson, Alan Trammel, Alfredo Griffin, Tony Fernandez and Omar Vizquel. Made offensive contributions to their teams, but not dominant. A-Rod, Ripken and Jeter are a new bread of ass kickers who can play the field and hit with dominance.

Morgoth - yes, best franchise. You must be some kind of twit who is an analyst for a widget company. The best team in the history of baseball was the 1927 NY Yankees. The teams Jeter has been on are a close second to any other team in the history of the game - see rings.

I root for the Red Sox, but I sure wouldn't mind having Derek Jeter on my team.
    Capecards
  • HAHAHA, oh now I'm a hater. I've said it time and again, he's a great player, period.
But no, sorry, 200 million plus, highest payroll by an entire team year after year and all you can boast about are pennants? You're kidding right? My Expos went to the post season once, and now they are no more. Too bad for me. I still root for great players and enjoy watching Jeter. I actually like the guy. It's great to have a player that you really like and can cheer for (I loved Tim Raines and Andres Galarraga), but he is certainly NOT an all-time great. When all is said and done (say in 8 or 9 years when he hangs up his spikes), they may talk about Griffey from this era, or maybe even some will talk about Bonds, but NO ONE will talk about Jeter, and that's my point. Why does it bother me that guys put him up there with Mantle and Dimaggio so much, I don't know?--but this is a public forum. I can say my peace like anyone else here.
That's all, good luck to the Yanks, good luck to the Sox, whoever wins, but enough about Jeter guys, come on!

    1. Yanks payroll not even close to those numbers in the pennant years.
    2. Just goes to show once again that high payroll does not equal pennants. That arguement is the most tired of all.

LOL. Now you are a hallucinating. Jeter will be talked about forever as one of the best Shortstops that ever played the game. Have you noticed how the price of Jeter autographed memorabilia is going through the roof lately?

I see Jeter was pretty clutch in the 9th inning today, with the game on the line.

It was F-Rod on the mound, no crime in that. Of course Jeter would have to be batting 1.000 in that type of spot to quiet somebody with "B",s for eyeballs.

DH, actually I am a research scientist. You can just admit you meant to use a different word as I was just pointing out that was a pretty strong overstatement of this years Yankees team. I never reverted to name calling or demeaning Jeter so I don't know why your so angry.

I do not think it is clear that he is the worst, but he might be. I have certainly seen dumber things said on this board. If you wish to defend his fielding, please do so with data, not antecdotal evidence. I do not care how many Gold Gloves he has won. Many Gold Gloves have been awarded to undeserving recipients.

Fielding percentage? I did know that anyone still considered that to be a useful tool for evaluating defenders. In The Fielding Bible, Bill James (I will take his statistical analysis over the opinion of anyone here) wrote prior to the 2006 season that the six of the seven worst defensive seasons by a shortstop in the last 30 years belong to Jeter. The seventh belongs to Wil Cordero. His article is in the front of the book.

Look at the zone rating and range factor for the evidence presented in "support" of Jeter. They negate the argument you are trying to make.
  • The overrating of Jeter's fielding comes primarily from two plays, one was what I call the mistake play. That is the one where Giambi did not slide into home plate because of pure idiocy and lack of hustle. The other is the one where Jeter dove into the stands 'after' he caught the ball. This is hailed as one of the greatest plays ever by Jeter fans and is posted on here. I saw a play far better than that one, by leaps and bounds, and it was at Soldiers Field by a regular guy.

This guy was sitting in seats directly behind the field goal post right next to the runway...of which the ground of the runway was appx 15-20 feet below him. A field goal was kicked though the upright, and this guy jumped over the partition, caught the ball in mid air ABOVE THE OPEN RUNWAY, fell down below and held onto the ball! Amazing! image

Don't be fooled by the occasional eye appealing play by Jeter, it is THE BALLS HE DOES NOT GET TO that make him a below average fielder!

There are many MLB shortstops who don't have two famous plays PUBLICIZED like that on their resume, but who are vastly better fielders.

Jeter is a lock HOFer and I love his continued excellence at the plate...he has the only chance on the horizon of passing Rose's hit record. He also has a year or two where he should have garnered more MVP consideration. But he is simply not a + fielding SS.
  • markj111markj111 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭
I agree entirely. BTW, Jeter is above average on popups (according to the article referred to previously). As you note, his weakness is the large number of ground balls he does not reach.
