Seeking information on swiss shooting medals

I went to the TNA show yesterday and found a dealer with several very beautiful high relief silver Swiss medals from the mid-to-late 1800s. I almost bought one, but he was asking $150 a piece and I really had no idea of their value. I have looked on Ebay and Google and can't find anything similar.

The medals were commemorating a Swiss shooting competition. Several of them featured a man with a bow and arrow; one displayed a bear standing on two legs; and several of the reverses showed cityscapes. The dealer said they were minted in the hundreds, but I still figured I could find something on the internet.

Has anybody else seen these or know what they are worth?

I have several shooting medals in this collection but most are from France and Belgium. Lions on Medals

He may also have been referring to Swiss Shooting Thalers which is something different., And your descriptions could have been of City View Thalers. Both collectible areas, but would have to see the piece in question to determine a priceimage

If I would've seen a swiss shooting metal in UNC for $150, I'd be on it like stink on.....

The dealer was misleading you; mintages range from 15,000 in the 1860s to 30,000 in the 1880s. Still rare but not in the hundreds.

    Here's 2 I got outbid on recently:

    Damn #1

    Damn #2

The best current reference is the JÜRG RICHTER book on "Die Schützentaler und Schützenmedaillen der Schweiz“ and “Die Schützenjetons der Schweiz“ (2005).

Most likely you were seeing either Regional or National Shooters, although he may have also had some of the regular Federal issues.

Price? Totally depends on the condition of the Shooter and which Kanton is represented.

Now I really wish I would have picked them up. All of them were nice BU with prooflike to DMPL surfaces. image

Well, at least I will be more knowledgeable next time. I was just hesitant spending over $100 on a coin that I knew nothing about.

Did you get the dealer's name? You could always look him up.

It really sucks being so far away from coin shows of any size.

Swiss shooting thalers are amazingly cool. They used to be listed in the regular Krause catalog, but have now been relegated to the catalog of unusual coins.
