Aside from the fact that Clemens and the team would probably never go for it I meant it ONLY under the situation where in the yankees had 4 healthy and able starters going into the postseason.
Should Mussina, Pettitte, Wang, and Hughes all be healthy and on top of their game come playoffs they only need a 4 man rotation and that is where Clemens bridging the gap to Rivera would be a perfect fit.
Heck, as a setup man pitching an inning or two at the most Clemens could probably pitch until he was into his 50's.
Just imagine what that would already do for his legend and aura. Reinventing himself in his late 40's and becoming a dominant setup man after his 50th birthday ! >>
Who knows? Maybe he might accept a role like this down the road, it's obvious he still wants to be part of the game and he is getting older. There might come a time when he can only give a couple of innings and give it a shot.
<< <i><<Barry- I would like to think that Curt is proffesional enough to accept any positive help to the team he could get but it would be a slap in the face to a guy that is still effective and pitches his heart out every outing.. I bet this crossed Theo's mind a few times.>>
perkdog, it couldn't have bothered Theo too much considering he was willing to pay well over $20 million (including luxy tax). >>
That might be true but it also could have been a ploy to drive his price up for you guys. ALA Bellichek style
<< <i>What? Funny how you are all of a sudden flush with confidence - it's a good day for Yankee fans to post, eh?
Here's some analysis for you - last season, Clemens pitched in the NL Central, not exactly the best hitting division in baseball. Now, after being away for several years, he will have to face AL hitting, more specifically, AL East opposition. There is a big difference between pitching in the AL than pitching in the NL. You will come down from your high horse for a minute to see that, right? >>
Heh, little Yankee fan mini-me's running around here fellas.
I dunno Jer, have you climbed off of your D-Mat high horse yet? Enough to admit this guy is NOT nearly the 100 million man the Sox STUPIDLY paid this guy.
Listen, every one of you Sox fans knocking this Clemens move would be giddy as 12 year old kids on the last day of school if Theo had landed Rocket. Well, they didn't and its all sour grapes now.
Whats the matter , do you guys feel like the fools you are for being slow enough to fall for and use the last place jokes, the rotation jokes, ...... sniff sniff.
Excluding openning day schedules, the rotation spots are useless. All it takes is one rainout or injury to put the schedule out of whack with your matchups. That is why the Sox wounded up matching Julian Tarvarez, their #5 guy, against Johan Santana, the Twins #1 guy.
At this point, if Clemens HAD joined the Red Sox, it would have been irrelevant what spot he took. Although they did mention that it would have been the #5 spot with Tarvarez going back to the bullpen if that had happened.

<< <i>But if the Bosox signed him, he would be their #1 or #2, right? >>
Absolutely not. He's behind Schilling, Beckett, D-Mat, and maybe even Wakefield, if he pitches in Boston. No question about it. >>
Agreed, I said #3 at best for Clemens, and, at this point, that is probably an insult to Wakefield with his ERA in the low 2's.
