FUGLY Toning
Here is one that I have that is just FUGLY....
Anyone care to guess how it got this way...and whether it is NT or AT (depending on the definition you have of each, of course
).
Since I have had this the entire time, I know how it got its toning and can say whether I believe it to be NT or AT

What happened was that I placed it on a little display stand, raw and unprotected, on a windowsill, along with some others.
This was the only one that was on a stand by itself (not in a cardboard holder) and was also the only one that, I later noticed as I wondered what happened, was directly above the heat vent......about 4' above the floor heater. Since it was "standing up" on the plastic stand, I think the hot air was able to interact with it more, whereas the others were lying flat and in a cardboard holder.
I like to look at some of my coins, and the SAEs are ones I like to look at it....in this case, it created a coin I really don't like to look at
So, no matches, no sulphur product applied to it, no oven, no egg, etc.....I consider it improperly stored but NT....others may, or may not, agree.

I didn't "mind" if it toned
Well, even given the heat definition from PCGS, I think it is still NT because the coin never got hot. Put your hand 4 feet above a floor heater....tell me how hot your hand gets.
Now, put it on a windowsill and tell me if it gets hot 4' above a floor heater. I'd bet you it doesn't.
Most likely, something in the air that is concentrated through the flow of warm air.....makes me wonder what are lungs are like in the house
Everyone loves to shout AT at stuff and stretch at the reasons......like I said early on, everyone has their own definition, I am not interested in changing that for anyone right now. Just showing an UGLY toned SAE and given the life history of its toning, which I can account for since I have had it since day 1 basically.
Could I repro the toning? Doubt it. Maybe some of the ugliness and colors. Would take me about a year of just leaving an SAE in the windowsill on the plastic stand but I doubt it would tone the same. Might try it, who knows? But, I really don't care to...I don't like how it turned out and I didn't know it would happen like that anyway....it's fugly!

<< <i>Since you don't like the toning, it might be interesting to try dipping it off, just to see what would happen. >>
Thought about it...only ever dipped 1 coin in my life though...so, I am not a heavy "dipper"
May still try it but I want to see, since I have moved it from where it was and put it in a cardboard holder like the others, if it continues to tone, and how.
It takes time and I wasn't foresighted enough to take pictures along the way (every month or so) since I didn't even think it would tone like this. My others that are just sitting out raw are just getting golden brown. The ones in the plastic coin roll containers are still blast white.
I just think SAEs are cool to show and have around...and cheap enough, and easy enough to replace, to do it.

Not sure what part of the country you're in, but if the heater needed to be on, it was probably cold outside (duh) and could have had minor condensation going on from the cold/hot sensations producing moisture which toned it?
Plenty of possibilities, but probably not a lot of answers. I agree it's fugly though

<< <i>Was it in a room where it was possible some contaminant was inadvertently added? Things like perfume, air freshener, rug deodorizer during cleaning, near an ironing board where starch overspray could have happened, etc? It does look like the toning occurred where some sort of foreign substance was going on.

Home office. Upstairs (2nd floor). Seattle area.
We don't wear perfumes or colognes. No rug deodorizers either. Wife won't iron, so that isn't it
Aside from air, there is honestly no foreign substance that I can think of (that was part of the reason I put it on one of those small plastic stands...so it wouldn't touch anything I thought could contaminate it).
Condensation? Maybe something around that but haven't seen any on the windows, even in the winter. My PCs are on almost all the time, so this room stays warm (~74F or so).
CCMorgan...yes, the reverse is toned a little...but did NOT tone until I noticed the obverse was fuglizing and reveresed it on the stand..... this was about 4-5 months ago and I figured the obverse was already a write off

<< <i>I think the Fugly NT issue is an interesting and important one. Many people complain about dipping and loss of originality but how many of those dipped coins were FNT that didn't have any buyers? >>

Sorry, can't help you on that....any coins that tone in my possession are accidental to a large degree (aside from improper storage) and I don't know how to get all pretty with them
I wish I could then...not to slab but to give out as gifts...I know many people that don't collect coins that would flip over a super colorful SAE
