<< <i>Ron, i think many dealers badmouth shows because there is even more collectors doing the same. Just look at this thread as an example. Many collectors go to shows thinking they should be able to pay ebay rock bottom prices for cards when in reality that is really not possible for the dealers to do. There are plenty of collectors willing to pay above ebay prices, but there is also large segment who has become accustomed to the ebay lows. >>
This is not a fair characterization of most board members' complaints with shows. Nobody here expects to pay Ebay prices for cards at a show--- but then, nobody is willing to pay 4x more for a card at a show then what they would pay on the 'bay. And when it comes to vintage material at card shows this is exactly how most dealers price their goods. Again, if you're not a vintage collector you may not see this, but let me assure you that 9 out of 10 showcases in an average show will be stocked full of VG-EX cards that the dealer has priced at 80% of full book, and most of these cards can be bought online for 20% of that price.
If I can get a card for $55 at a show that usually sells for $40, or $35, on Ebay then I'll consider it. But I will not pay $100 or $120 for that card, and neither will most of the collectors who frequent these boards.
<< <i>I just got in from ny tonite, i stopped by inthegrades booth and he has amazing stuff, I bought a lot sold a few items, it was mostly a buying show for me... Hard to find that many prospects in one area. I busted a lot of wax, heard about the kid that bought a 39 dollar tin and pulled a ruth cut, overall fun show. >>
thanks for the compliment!
i think some people are missing something. i set up at the show & i paid $750 for my booth. i did offer my items for reasonable prices & i would say 75 % of them less then my ebay store. i still though had to give away 750 of inventory before i made a profit.

best deals I've ever found were at shows. Just have to find the nice raw stuff, discount stuff, or more obscure stuff. PSA graded stars and hofers will never be underpriced at a show, but a raw '57 common in nm/m you might find for $2 which is a great deal. Plus, it's a lot of fun for me to go through a bunch of boxes looking for nice cards.
i'll be at spors tfest & then the national. my set up wont be as huge as white plains but i will bringing some nice stuff. maks sure you stop by & say hello.
