I'll either be there or in Morocco.
  • I live on Long Island and used to go to this show religiously. I haven't been to one in a year, but the show was just going down hill. Same dealers with the same inventory every other month. I go to the show with the intent on spending a few grand. The last show I spent less than the admission fee (admission was $8 I think??).
I've heard from some friends it's getting better though. I'll try to go to the show on Sunday and see if it has improved.

A friend of mine took over the show from Rothstein about a year ago, and now its run by JP Sports (he's who I know) and Rock solid promotions. Since the change there are more out of town sellers, better signers, less admission, etc....

Just wanted to enlighten some guys that still think its the same old show that Rothstein ran into the ground. image
  • i'll be set up there. the show is a very good.
  • Nick- It's true about the better autograph guests. I just need to see better and more diverse product. I'll make it a point to go that Sunday though.

I live in White Plains and after taking a 25 year break finally went to a show last year. I wasn't impressed. Based on what I am hearing however, it seems that things may be improving. Maybe I will give it a shot. I understand PSA willbe there accepting submissions for the first time too. Gotta be a reason for that.

I wouldn't go too crazy here - this show has been going downhill for years, and the last one (in March) was a complete bust. The guys that run it now are better than Rothstein, but it still is a shadow of what it used to be. It's mostly modern cards, and the usual EX-MT vintage at NM-MT prices. Not worth a long trip, IMO.

It's today, tomorrow and Sunday. Should be a lot of nice items between vintage, modern, autograph guests, etc.....

I'll be there on Saturday. My goal is to make it right around 10, though my hangover may have other ideas.

I'll be there when they start at 3PM today. Sometimes sellers are a little looser when the show first starts so they can get some of there table cost and travel expense money back right away.

Can't say I disagree. They should put this show out of its misery already. I was there tonight, and there was desperation in the air from the moment you walked in. Dealers would pounce on you if you even stopped to glance at one of their EX-MT cards that they were asking full book price for.

Card shows are not what they used to be, but this one is tough. It's like walking into a den of used car salesmen with bad toupees.

That's one great line to describe the current state of card shows. I couldn't agree more, although you could've added dealers that are overweight, snacking on some chips, that don't look like they've bathed in awhile too.

Just got back from this show... Was dropping off cards for psa.

Mind you this is the first show I have been to in 10 years...

I took 7k with me to see if any good deals on any psa cards ..1979-1998 is all i really know so thats what I was looking for..

    I came home with $6993... ($7 admis)

Some of the few cards I saw were so ridiculously priced it wasnt even worth asking if they could do better on the price..

Anyway- Saved $150 on shipping to PSA so i guess i got something out of it...

Prices that are at least roughly in line with the market value would be a nice start.

I'd rather mail my cards to PSA.

I spent about $1100 or so there buying inventory for my shop/website/ebay store. I would have bought more but i had limited time and limited funds. Maybe it is the difference between the vintage and modern card buyers? I buy mainly modern stuff, but i did pick up some nice good-vg vintage at 15-20% that sells excellent at 40% in my shop.

Good to hear Ted. I thought the days of vintage doing well in a shop were long gone. What "vintage" years did you pick up there for 15% to 20%?
  • tedh111tedh111 Posts: 258
I picked up some minor stars, especially yankees, from the late 50's early 60's. Our store does pretty well with vintage cards, especially mid-low grade stars and minor stars, and ex-nm commons from the 60's. We help a lot of guys build sets and we also get a lot of people coming in for affordable cards of their favorite players of the past, so it is a very nice mix.

This "show" emphasizes how the internet has taken over this industry....

everything you could get at this "show", you could get on ebay for less....

Nowadays, nice PSA items are sold via the "magazine-style" auction houses, not at the "show"....

the people you see selling at these "shows" are usually the ones who havent met the internet yet....

there are no local card stores within 30 miles of me (grew up around 5!), yet i dont fell the need to go to one...

only place to buy packs is at walmart/target, where you get "retail" trash, better off buying unopened boxes online....

even bulk supplies can be purchased online (tax-free).....

This "show" just reminds us that this is an Online/FedEX/USPS hobby, sorry 80's lovers....

  • tedh111tedh111 Posts: 258
Sorry fandango, not true. A large percentage of the dealers at the white plains show are also internet dealers as well. And of course you can find most of the items for less on ebay, but there are many many collectors who would rather have the card in hand before purchasing it over looking at a picture on a computer screen.

It's hardly an all-star dealer selection at this particular show. The ones that do sell on Ebay use shows like this as their dumping ground for the lower grade crapola that they could not sell on Ebay, or could not grade.

Fandango is partially correct - the hobby is more or less an internet based one these days. But there are a few shows still worth attending. I can count those on one hand, with a few fingers to spare, but they do exist. This show is clearly not one of those - in fact, it's a poster child for everything that is wrong with card shows in 2007. I would never send someone there who had limited hobby knowledge, because he would be ripped off in that den of thieves faster than you could imagine.

I guess we can have our differences in opinions and again, maybe it is because i am more into modern cards then i a vintage, but as i previously posted i did get a number of quality vintage buys. I guess it all comes down to the eye of the beholder. I love going to shows, i love looking through boxes and i love checking out cool inventory in person. I also have a lot of fun interacting to collectors and other dealers, because that what makes this or any other hobby fun. To me, its not all that fun to do everything on the internet because its not really personal interaction.

  • I just got in from ny tonite, i stopped by inthegrades booth and he has amazing stuff, I bought a lot sold a few items, it was mostly a buying show for me... Hard to find that many prospects in one area. I busted a lot of wax, heard about the kid that bought a 39 dollar tin and pulled a ruth cut, overall fun show.

This is how every show is, i do almost every major show now, you pay premiums because they use book values, if your looking for ebay values or lower, do not go to a show youll be disappointed. I bought tons of raw cards at the last sun times show that gem'ed out, sometimes dealers won't grade unless they can RCR or have the card back in hand.

BTW most cards we sold were at ebay prices and we had no problems moving things, yes some things we priced high but those were ones we saw potential in, I know I got a very generous over ebay offer on some dodger prospect cards but sometimes its not all about the money =)

If anyone came to the show I was by the psa booth with the dodgers hat on with all the prospects.

Warning to dealers, the industry and the "hobby": the day shows stop happening is the day I stop collecting. I like seeing the material, meeting fellow collectors, and talking to dealers. It makes me feel like a kid again. I'm in my mid 30's and I can guarantee you that the day this hobby rests solely within online business and private auction houses is the day I will consider it ruined and get out of it for good. Every month in SMR I see yet another "dealer profile" and whatever dealer is profiled is poormouthing the show, saying it's become obsolete, they can't make money, blah blah blah. This month it's the Ninth Inning dude, last month it was somebody else. I'm realistic enough to know that it will never be the 80's again, but there is a place for the show in this hobby. Maybe if dealers bothered to advertise smaller, local shows a little it might draw kids back into it. I'm just sick of people badmouthing shows.

I know there are others out there that agree with me.

Ron, i think many dealers badmouth shows because there is even more collectors doing the same. Just look at this thread as an example. Many collectors go to shows thinking they should be able to pay ebay rock bottom prices for cards when in reality that is really not possible for the dealers to do. There are plenty of collectors willing to pay above ebay prices, but there is also large segment who has become accustomed to the ebay lows.
