Basestealer, it IS benefitting me - I haven't tried to take pictures for about a week or so, I was getting really frustrated. But you inspired me to try it again tonight. I'm finally making some progress (hope this image isn't too big!! Sorry if it is).
Edited image, it was HUGE! Sorry
Exclusively collecting Capped Bust Halves in VF to AU, especially rarity 3 and up. Joe G. Great BST purchases completed with commoncents123, p8nt, blu62vette and Stuart. Great coin swaps completed with rah1959, eyoung429 and Zug. Top-notch consignment experience with Russ.
Go with a used copy stand and a couple halogen bulbs on flexible arms, you can pick a setup up dirt cheap, just go to any photo supply place that sells used equipment. Shoot the coins on a black velvet pad in low light as suggested earlier (except for, of course, the bulbs you're lighting the coin with). You'll get exponentially better results than the out of focus photos you're getting now.
There's a lot of great coin photography threads that can be found with the search function that will give you step-by-step instructions on getting a great image with a cheap setup.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.

How are you setting your white balance? How do you focus? Could you repeat what you did in the first image you posted as far as focus? You need a camera that allows you to set white balance and one that will focus properly.

I have been a collector for over mumbly-five years. I learn something new every day.
<< Cut the top off a Milk jug, place padding (Black) in the bottom of jug, place coin on padding, place light on outside of jug preferably from two directions... take picture.
Great tip...I'm going to try that.
Positive transactions with Cladiator, Meltdown, ajbauman, LeeG, route66,DennisH,Hmann,FilamCoins,mgoodm3,terburn88,MrOrganic, weg,dcarr,guitarwes,Zubie,Barndog,wondercoin,braddick,etc...
Take the proof coins from a slight angle, as mesquite suggested, and use a black t-shirt. Excellent results. Also, if you can figure out how to set your white balance, you will have a world of improvement.
