Coinstar jackpot...

...well sort of.

It had 25 Chuck E. Cheese tokens that my kids oohed and aahed over. A couple of other playland type tokens, two Mexican peso coins and about 70 cents in cents, nickels and dimes.

No silver.

I looked silly walking around the grocery store with all of that in my pockets.

Oh well, it beats nothing.
Some call it an accumulation not a collection

The problem is they changed the machine to tell the users to "check the bin for rejected coins," so now fewer coins are left behind. I still manage to find a foreign coin or silver dime every once in a while though. I also have about 25 elongated pennies I've found
I like cheese, notes, and coins. In that order.

Don't forget to check around the machine too. Sometimes the goodies roll under the machine and people are too lazy to retrieve them.

Last Wednesday evening I was in a local grocery to buy milk. There was a lady with a small child at the Coinstar machine. She had a glass jar partially filled with coins. As I wheeled by shopping cart past her, I looked at the jar and it was obvious that it contained mostly silver halves and quarters. I stopped dead in my tracks, approached the woman, told her what she had in the jar and offered to buy them for four times face for everything in the jar. I showed her the cash I had to prove I could buy them….fifteen minutes later, after sorting and stacking the coins as quickly as possible, I gave her over $400 in paper money – more than four times what she would have gotten with the machine. The lady was both amazed and happy. I told her how to reach me if she had more coins like these (the next batch will be 1972 Washingtons, I bet…)

This weekend will see if I broke even. As far as bullion goes, there were enough clad coins to leave only a small profit; however, all the silver halves were WL and the silver quarters were a mix of SL and Washington with quite a few of the SLQs having good dates. Bunch of buffalos, too.

This is not something I usually do, and it seemed more like a rescue mission that anything else.

You might wanna look at them again. Make sure they're not Washington Dollars.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!

Yep.. those machines always seem to be empty.... one day I think I will bring a book and lunch and sit in front of the machine all day... maybe hit a treasure like the one posted above. Cheers, RickO
  • What do you guys mean by "checking" a coin star machine? How do you check a coin star machine? I didn't know you could get anything out of them. I thought you could only put stuff in. image

  • There's a reject slot for silver, canadian coins, and tokens and stuff. I tried checking it after reading about it on the boards, and I actually found a couple of silver dimes if I remember correctly.

then take that money, buy some rolls of coins at the bank and cherry pick. Try to find extra leaf, wide am's, doubled dies, or cheerio sacagaweas.... or any coin that will make MS68 or above.
    (my humble opinion)

Pay phones? Pay phones?? Have you tried finding pay phones lately? image (Ok, you can find them in a few areas, but for the most part they have gone the way of the Dodo bird since everyone carries cell phones nowadays.)
