PCGS makes mistakes. PCGS may well have made a mistake. PCGS is not without errors. All coins should be treated as raw whether they are in a slab or not--in this case, the fact that PCGS slabbed it is no proof that the coin is not AT.
First of all, I love beautifully toned coins, but that coin is an ABOMONATION. This is a real serious issue.
Is there a way to use some sort of solvent to open a PCGS holder, remove the coin, AT it, then re-encapsulate it?
I really think PCGS needs to chime in on this specific coin, as it raises monumental credibility issues. Something does not add up. Not surprising the same dealer has 2 coins with this sort of toning (the franklin as well). I didn't check his seller list, bet it has others.
These unscrupulous dealers are ruining the appreciation (and premium value) for beautifully naturally toned coins. The TPG's need to invest some money into researching how to tell the difference.
Lets get real folks! In ALL OF THE HISTORYOF NUMISMATICS, not once, NOT ONCE has a coin ever toned like that -- until artificial toning solution came about.
Unless the entire physics and chemical properties of the universe have changed, that puppy is ARTIFICIALLY toned.
Let's quit kidding ourselves, and push for a resolution of this issue.
This is reason # 987 why I no longer collect coins actively. Medal Collectors would never put up with this hype.

I doubt it, that would require the owner to have the coin removed from the slab and regraded. Why do that? To get a PR70? May get bodybagged? I would have loved to see a TrueView of that masterpiece! Would make a great screensaver!

The interesting part to me is that it was a new 10-digit PCI holder with a red border, meaning they flagged it as a problem coin (sort of the PCI equivalent of a bodybag). I can count on one hand how many coins I've seen in red-border holders from that version of PCI.
So suppose I showed you that coin, and told you that it submitted twice for grading, once to PCI and once to PCGS. Then I told you one company sent it back flagged for questionable toning and the other graded it MS69. How many of you could have correctly matched the results to the company?

Not really my arena, but I read the forums a lot and I'll give my two cents. First impression, clown coin. Obvious AT. And yeah, it's hard to believe it's not. But if you step back and try to take a grader's perspective, you can imagine how one might slip through. They make mistakes, these guys get what, 15 seconds/coin? These bulk submissions, everyone sending in 100 GW's, ASE's, all the mint garbage hoping they hit the lotto with a 70. WTF? These silver bullion coins can quickly take on some serious tone, just look at Boom's 2005. So graders must receive a wide spectrum of toned examples, many of them stunning and actually NT. Short of conducting a chemical analysis or laser scan of the surface, graders must subjectively arrive at a determination of market acceptability right away. Once in a while they blow one. It's the law of averages. Just add this to the pile of evidence against the evils of the TPG system. But don't try to build a case on one hand while playing the plastics game on the other. The real argument appears to be the degree to which the TPG system can ethically be exploited while maintaining your coin collecting street cred. It's a very mushy line.
Leaves me at a loss. Any possibility of a fake slab? or that the seller is just messing around with no real hope of selling it and photoshopped in into a PCGS holder?. Can anyone check when the PCGS graded it? I am lost here. Bob
