All-
I have never submitted a coin to be graded. However, most of what I would want graded is coal scrip.
Do any of the grading companies grade scrip? I have asked this before in the PCGS forum and to date, I did not get an answer. This was a year ago....SO, I thought with all of the slabbed so called dollars and medals out there, would grading coal scrip be a thing that is doable?
Any thoughts are appreciated. If however, this turns into a lets show the new guy what a mental pygmy he is pile on freak show....I can always PM folks who would know. Thanks for your consideration.

Maybe that was your answer.
So, ONCE AGAIN, no answer means I did not get an answer. I am not married or have realations with these folks. A simple hey, no! or golly gee yes! OR the famous...BEATS ME would be just swell in answering my question.......
With information such as that available, there exists a greater likelyhood that encapsulation MIGHT be possible, although you might NOT have the option available with the TPG of your preference......
Although EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE, there are less than a handful of forum contributors here who can speak for a TPG with any authority.....

I didn't. But, I clicked the link in his sig.

I will make certain to give the TPG a jingle and find out.
Scrip is of facination to me because for me, I knew the folks who worked in the store that minted the scrip. Coal Scrip, is a credit against accrued wages of a miner. If you had no money, you could get a scrip card and get these coins as a form of currency for that town store.
Of course, that meant you were broke etc etc. However, from a coin point of view, imagine if you could meet the relatives or the actual folks who worked at the CC mint and you could also, meet the folks who spent those coins when they were a viable currency. In fact, I bet a few folks here would go buck nutty at that opportunity.
With coal scrip, I can/have done do this. A few rare pieces of less than 10 total in population, I can track down to maybe the four or five folks who spent the coin. Its pretty cool. Yes, I collect actual everyday coins as well (usually proofs); but the whole concept is very cool to me at least.
By the way, yes, I knew the person who made the coin in the late 1940's EARLY 1950's in my sig line. AND yes, I know the folks who spent that coin. Better yet, I think the total population for this coin is MAYBE ~15 to 25. It is rated an r-9 out 10 for rarity. An r-10 is a freak of rarity and yes, I have seen a few of those.
Otherwise, I have to a a collector know that the scrip I have was used by a miner. Its a rush and for me a perk.
But I have seen someplace (beats me, once again?) where you can have an item "authenticated" and slabbed without grading.... maybe that would do? (If I figure out where I saw it I'll add the info about which company it was) - Good Luck!
Cool Scrip Piece too!

That would be exactly what I would want.
Scrip is a bit of a clash (no pun there) for the folks in the regular coin world.
I want the gnarly dug up worn tabacco stained rubbed coal dusted sweated on coin that was in the soul drained exhausted man that spent it to feed his kids. Its a charisma. Grading the piece (assigning a state so that a value is given) would be a total degradation as to why I collect in the first place. Grading to me has meant, its real and oh by the way, its in this condition. NOT the mantra that is pumped out that hey company x gave this a PF 99 million and hence this coin is now worth a gabillion bucks.......
Coin folks, in general want a fine specimen that is nearly pristine or as orginal as possible.......Then you have proof and MS folks who like my self in proofs want a thing of beauty....They are 2 different worlds really.

"I'm fairly sure PCGS, NGC, and ANACS will not grade it. There maybe a slight chance that ICG might but I doubt it. SEGS might since they are more open to collector type material. There used to be a service First Token Grading Service that would have, but they were pirating ACG shells and are now out of business.
I would try contacting J T Stanton at PCI. They are ramping up their SIgnature Series again, and if their is a recognized expert on the coal scrip that they can get to "sign on" with them and agree to examine submitted scrip they might be willing to add the coal scrip to thier line up of gradable item."

That's as good an assessment as one will get here.

I will try PCI.
I think the main thing I am trying to get done is that like other exonumia, coal scrip has its own qualities which would make it as legitimate to grade as any other thing out there.
The hardest challenge in scrip collecting is not only the knowledge about the actual scrip itself, its also the visibility factor.
Some of the very rare pieces do have pics, but may would not know then by sight alone.
