What next?

scooter25scooter25 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭✭
I am almost done completing my first set. It is a kennedy set all bu and including proofs and silver proofs I think I did pretty well for my first set but anyways I just always liked the kennedys. I am going to start a new set but what should it be? I am still pretty new to this so I am not sure.

I also wanted to know why the kennedy halves aren't a very popular coin among collectors? Or are they more popular than I think?image

Try on the Ike or SBA dollar series. Both are short series, readily available, and undervalued.

I want something that is going to be worth collecting I don't know why but the kennedys just aren't as valuable as I expected.

IMO, nothing is more fun than the 50 piece early commemorative set.

I think it is a popular set with collectors. The main turn-off for me is the recent noncirculating years. I did mine (almost) entirely from circulation, but I refuse to buy rolls from the mint to keep it up to date.

How tough do you want your next challange to be?

I definatly want it to be more challenging than the kennedys but I also want it to have more velue than the kennedys. The SBAs I have most of them except for the 1999 coins I have the 79-81 Ps Ds and Ss.

A type set, they make you do all sorts of homework. Learning a little about a lot of different coins makes you appreciate all them even more.image

would Frankies be a good choice?image

    Do you like Frankies?

Personally, I regret that I waited so long to assemble a gold type set. It's impressive to others and most can be obtained for a minimum over melt depending on the grades you pursue.

Gold was a lot cheaper 5-10 years ago but I don't foresee it going back down to those levels anytime soon either.

I also completed a Kennedy set about 5 years ago, and up to that point the prices were a lot stronger than they are today for the Proof's. I did end up selling them on eBay & got "turned on" to the cc Morgan $ series. Completed that set ( all but the 89). Learned a lot about the Morgan $ series. But like the Kennedy's, I eventually sold the cc's & moved into Peace $ that I also completed & sold last year. I make it a habit not to sit on any series for to long. The joy is in the research, search & eventuall purchase. Good luckimage

1948-1963 and depending on the grades you seek, it can be quite affordable, and do-able.

I agree on the susan b anthony dollars. They seem to be able to be picked up at a signifant discount to the so called trend price. I think the Ikes a a little bit tougher for some reason. If it were me, I would sell all the Kennedy's and buy a nice seated Liberty Dollar or early dollar before they start to really climb.

    Try walking liberty halfs!

A complete set of circ strikes is 65 coins, or you could do a date set 25 coins, or a late date set 40 coins or a short set 20 coins!

I started my walkers by concentrating a the short set coins, now I am expanding it to the late date and complete circ set coins!

Try The ASE set's. I push these on everyone. Just lookout for the milk spots. They are very nice looking coins. Whatever you choose, have fun & do your home work.image

I'll second the franklins! With exception to the 49-S and 49-D, you can get the next tougher dates for $35 or so, and many of them for $20 or less.

If you decide to start a franklin set, PM me, I might have a few extra BU coins for sale to get you started!

I think the Eisenhower is a potential sleeper. Especially the silver Ikes. It's a short set and very affordable and doable. A type set would very cool and quite challenging, let doable if you're not determined to collect all the dates and mint marks in a single series.

I love 20th Century Type, its a collection you can put together with as little money as you like, or crazy moon money.. depending on your goals. I am working hard on my set, and I can honestly say, it will never be done.. complete yes.. done no.. I will always have upgrade, and to be a bit of a sadist, I am trying to do most of it in Keys or Semi-Keys.. More expensive, yes.. but in the long run my heirs will thank me.
