This could be a possible "You Suck"

Text

There is one of these in the new Stacks auction, albeit, a bit nicer toning, that is estimated for $550-$700.

The one in the Stacks auction is an original 19th century strike. The one in the eBay listing is a 20th century restrike. You didn't overpay, but you didn't get a 30x rip either, sorry!
  • HUGE difference between these 2 medals.

As stated in the last post, the Stacks medal is a 19th century copper bronzed strike. It has reflective surfaces, a mahogany bronze finish (a lost art at the US Mint) and was struck in very limited amounts. It was also struck with the original dies.

The medal you won is a 20th century, MODERN copy, struck by the US Mint in golden bronze, matte finish restrike, circa 1950-1970's. It sold at the US Mint for around $5.00 - $8.00 back then. While there were not large numbers of these struck, they are not as rare, or as sharply struck, or as collectible as the 19th century strike at Stacks. There is no established marketplace for 20th century restrikes, at least not yet. There is a long established marketplace for the 19th century strikes which has existed for over 100 years.

You simply cannot compare your example to the 19th century example. To describe the differences as a different "tone" is a huge understatement.

Umm, if the massed little guys portrayed are the American troops at the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War, they weren't repelling invaders... they were the invaders.

Cool medal, although even before reading ipmman's post, I wondered if it was a 20th century restrike. Still groovy, even so.

    PS- I like the snakes.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Is Medallic Art equivalent to MACO here and is anything that says Medallic Art likely to be 20th Century? I guess it could be just adjectives but they are capitalized. Anyone know if Medallic Art/MACO did these?

Do the two snakes symbolize anything special?
