That makes me think of Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Sixteen Tons of Number 9 Coal. Wonder why they wanted a patent for the coin?

Lots of coal scrip has a patent date on it. I'm not sure why. I hope that info is in the book I'm trying to find on WV scrip.
