Would it be possible to have a separate forum which only dealt with E-Bay and related matters?

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,708 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have never bought and will never buy a coin on E-bay. I have not looked at the site in five years. I do my best to avoid E-Bay related threads, but sometimes, the way they are titled, one doesn't know that they deal with E-bay until he opens them.

At best, I think E-bay is something to be avoided, as I think it does this hobby more harm than good. If there will not be a separate board dedicated to E-bay, could posters here at least clearly indicate when a post is E-bay related so those of us who do our best to avoid it can not open it.

I like ebay. Without ebay, I would likely be lacking a number of specimens of R-5 to R-7 die marriages for half dimes. I'm glad someone brought this topic up today, since I missed it yesterday, and the day before that, and ...

In what way does eBay do this hobby more harm than good? It's just a bunch of people buying and selling stuff.

When it comes to coins I think ebay buying -- or even shopping, for that matter -- offers a poor return on time invested. But I do like how these ebay discussions usually involve real coin issues like the appearance of cleaned coins, how grading fits in with selling policies, or even explaining how coins can appear to have been sneezed on. (It's true!)

I would disagree. While there are negatives to eBay (as there are to just about everything else), there are also benefits that I believe far outweigh them. Without eBay, I'd never have had the opportunity to add to my collection the number of coins I've had the good fortune to find available for sale there. In addition, I'd never have had anything like the amount of exposure that eBay provides for the stuff I've wanted to sell.
  • A lot of folks come here to learn about coin collecting. Since eBay is a great source for coins, I think everyone should be informed on its good and bad aspects. I have avoided scams by recognizing their traits from posts here.image

No, I think you are going to have to cull the threads you don't like yourself.image
    image
  • Are there too many threads you are not interested in?

Of course an eBay forum could be created. But a PCGS hosted forum for non-coin related subjects was very popular but then deleted. Why not browse the Internet and see the other coin related forums... some are not so busy as this one, perhaps they would be more fun for you?

Avoid Ebay? Surely you jest. How would those of us that live out in the boonies ever buy coins?

Do you think my local dealer would have a coin like this that he would sell to me for under $350? I don't think so....imageimage

  • Hello all, I am new to the board and coin collecting, this is my first post. I know it’s not the best way to get started in coin collecting but if not for ebay I probably would not be collecting. A friend of mine suggested I go to ebay when I was looking for some coins as Christmas present for a relative as the online stores I was looking at where greatly over priced. That was it I was hooked, after buying my presents I continued to shop for myself as I was new to this I got burned a lot. I have learned a lot from books and this board and purchased some great coins from ebay. I still have a lot to learn and the heads up that are occasionally brought up about ebay auctions and sellers are very informative and useful especially to new collectors.

if nothing else, ebay generates interest in and movement of collectable coins. I would hope the non-ebayers at least recognize that the coin hobby/profession can only benefit from this.

I don't buy or sell on ebay either. Ebay is like a box of chocolates. I prefer shows.

When it comes to the CU boards, the US Coin forum is the most highly read. There are other forums on these boards. I do appreciate the ebay threads here on the US Coin forum. I suppose if PCGS were to designate a forum dedicated to eBay, I might navigate over there a time or two. BUt I spend 95% of my time in the US Coin Forum. So maybe that would not be the best change for me. image

eBay has been a very good thing for me. Yes, it has it's problems, but once you learn the ropes, there's fun to be had and money to be made. I think this forum is valuable in dealing with eBay issues and should continue to do so...

    Folks, read the title.
This isn't someone wanting to ban eBay for the Forums, just separate FA threads from FS ones.
Unfortunately, this topic has been discussed many times before & it looks like it's not going to be done.
The consensus was that 'eBay' would be put in the title of the thread so people would know that the thread dealt with FA items on eBay.

But I agree with you my singing friend, there should be a seperate Forum for FA threads.

<< <i>I have never bought and will never buy a coin on E-bay. I have not looked at the site in five years.

    << <i>

Why not? Maybe you should look again if it has been 5 yrs! There are many poor deals on ebay but there are many good opportunities to fill holes in a registry set that would otherwise remain vacant with very nice examples. With the advancements of technology in digital cameras it is often easy to get an idea of the quality of the coin you are purchasing and with EBAY's current PayPal policies buyers are very protected if they follow the T's and C's.

<< <i>I do my best to avoid E-Bay related threads, but sometimes, the way they are titled, one doesn't know that they deal with E-bay until he opens them.

    << <i>

Again, I recommend jumping into the 21st century! Not every deal is great or even good, but to completely avoid this or any other market will exclude you from many great opportunities to own nice coins.

All kidding aside: If I have to read a posting like this where someone thinks that 165,000+ opportunities to purchase coins are completely worthless and a waste of time, that same person should realize that someone is buying through that forum and respect those who post and utilize it.

As I expected, many people responding to this thread completely missed my point. I am not on a jihad against E-bay. It's just that I -- as well as a number of others -- have absolutely no use for it. If I know a thread is about E-bay, I avoid it. Unfortunately, as of late, many people have started threads which are E-bay related but one cannot possibly have a clue this is the case until he opens them. After having this happen five times yesterday, I decided to comment about it.

As to the person / people that suggest that I spend more of my time to 'update' my opinion re E-bay, my response is that for the material I collect, it is not a good use of my time to search for coins there.
Also, I like to know with whom I am doing business, and do not like buying a coin sight unseen on approval (and if you're buying a coin from an image, that's exactly what you are doing, assuming the seller has an acceptable return policy).

To the extent it brings buyers and sellers together, I supose that it is a good thing. But to make an analogy, if everyone around me is selling kebabs and I want some feijoada, I need to go somewhere else to eat.

You could probably substitute any number of other topics for "eBay" and come to the same conclusion. I don't have a particular interest in Morgan dollars- do you think it would be a good thing for me to suggest that all threads regarding them be relegated to a separate forum so that I don't have to worry about accidentally opening one?

PCGS is not in business to make money for E-Bay.

Further, adding another Forum is just a pain ,as it

    will require more supervision.

As for E-Bay itself, while 90% of the stuff is crummy,

its that other 10% that is interesting.

Elcontador, I'll certainly try and remember to mention Ebay in my thread titles in deference to your post. NGC's site features thread identifiers that PCGS's site would benefit from. For Ebay related threads, the admin or poster will choose a folder icon with Ebay written on it.

  • I think "jihad" is a very poor choice of words.
  • There's great amount of interest in E-bay purchasing and selling. I have found feedback on specific sellers very valuable here in this forum. I myself think a separate forum here at PCGS would be super for E-bay and all other auction related questions, conundrums, advice, complaints, etc. The exception in my mind would be posts focusing on an aspect of a coin featured in an auction--not a seller/buyer related concern--which could still be posted in US or world coin forums.

But I don't think there is enough interest to make this happen!
