I think I have the rarest one of them all..

None of what you have listed is on this coin. Maybe I should put it on the bay as the 1st correctly minted $1 GW !!!!!!!!
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.

  • I have found a few with a cud at the top of the A in states extending to the rim.

Edit: Also found one with an upside down P in the middle of the date on the edge. Only the top of the P, but it's clearly a P.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

I found 4 with the die clash that you pictured, (2) obverse & reverse, (2) reverse only, and none were on smooth edged coins.

Those die clashes are tough to spot.

Only auctions with good pictures like this one could someone spot it.

Seems error plagued - right from inception of the program... image Cheers, RickO
  • From what I've been able to discern regarding the visual anomalies is:

    Less common:
Smooth edge - missed the 2nd (incuse) minting step
Starburst - simple die fatigue (every one of the smooth edge coins I found had this)
SUNburst (shiny laminate rays) - struck through
Die clash - (Ob) shows Liberties crown under George's neck, (Rv) shows Georges curls/eyes(?) on the field (ie. extra spike in crown, hook on $1, etc.)

    More common:
    (die) cuds & cracks

just when you heard all about the prez errors then comes this:

there MAY exist two more interesting examples! according to CW april 2 edition the mint is looking into the claim that a backword edge lettered example may be out there. also there may be an edge letter example with a blank obverse and reverse. the mint police are on it!!

There is indeed a blank obv./rev. with edge lettering out there. PCGS certified one so far. More will probably show as it is just missing one of the steps of the minting process.
  • I have several sunburst smoothies, and probably alot more errors but am relativly new to this and uunsure what to look for, is the pcgs grading these as actual errors? And does it state that they are double error coins?
The secret? I don't know.. I think you just gotta find something you love to do ...and then do it for the rest of your life... for me, it's going to Rushmore.

The rarest error would be a dollar coin that actually circulated for more than one transaction
I like cheese, notes, and coins. In that order.

Hi Jenners! I live "down the street" from you (Sarasota)... and no, it doesn't seem that any error is being specified any longer other than "Missing Lettering" (Although PCGS was originally designating the Struck Thru "Sunburst" earlier).
But it seems the longer we wait & watch the more errors & variety show up on eBay (whether all are genuine, who knows?!)
Recently there have been big bucks spent on "Sintered" coins, and "unburnished" ones popping up too... and an assortment of clipped(?) coins.

After all the coins have been searched, and the fraudsters move on to something else, maybe we'll see some other graded error designations? I don't know...

But Congrats!! (BTW - if you search my username for threads, you can locate the one about case dates, inspector numbers & lucky finds if you want to add your info.)

It seems the real challenge will be to find a few decent GW's to put in a collection, I have two rolls of nothing but die clashes that are worth a dollar apiece, the challenge is finding an MS69 or MS70, that will be the rare one.

The double lettered incused edge reported in NN that went for around $1800.
  • I have seen the off-center strike being designated on a slab, but off-hand I don't recall which one?

(My first 4 bank rolls were ALL very off-center, so I thought that was the design... didn't know until after I'd spent them all and gotten more rolls that weren't...LOL)
