Baltimore NEWP - From Michael!

RonyahskiRonyahski Posts: 3,119 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was fortunate to be able to spend some time at the Baltimore show with Michael. We enjoyed pulling out some of our collection to look at and discuss. Some of Michael's were for sale. One coin he had in his collection was an 1862 Proof Seated Dime. For the Legend series, which are the post 1860 dates, the 1862 is the stopper in the series. There are only a handful of gems in existence. This coin is what I call a 3 second coin. One thousand one...place coin in hand..one thousand two...flip over...one thousand three...reach for cash. I am thrilled to have finally found this date for my set.

That is a very attractive piece. Nice catch on getting it and hanging with Michael for a bit.

Am curious. Why did he sell it? You don't find those in your change at Walmart.....

Great little dime there. Michael didn't offer to sell any of his coins when I saw him at the last Baltimore show. Guess he likes you better. Then again, even if he offered them to me for sale, I don't have the funds for a great coin like that.

I don't think Michael would mind me sharing a little detail, and I'm glad you asked. He has sold off some of his collection over the past few years. He owned an extraordinary group of coins and doesn't seem to have too much trouble when it comes time to sell, payoff for having a great eye.

Michael has been using the proceeds from coin sales to support "his kids". He has directly taken under his wing, guess you could say unofficially adopted, several kids living in foreign countries that are disadvantaged. As an example, Michael told me about an orphaned kid he met from Vietnam. The kid was an entrepenuer and wanted to start his own business in a small town in Vietnam. Problem was, after 7 years of working for miniscule wages and living in poverty, he had saved up a grand total of $50. Michael bought him a washer and a dryer, and co-signed on a lease for store space, and a laundrymat was formed. His kid is now doing very well, making far more income than before, and raised out of poverty.

He had other kids he told me about, and all of the time he devotes to them. Sure was humbling sitting there in the midst of such nobleness.

Ronyalski - Thanks for sharing that. This does not surprise me. Michael strikes me as that sort of guy.

'Bout the same as the obverse, a little less blue, and harder to capture in pic.
