Grades popped - huh?????

Just got grades posted and I'm absolutely dumbfounded. This Montana came straight from a pack. It was graded a 7.

How in the world can that be???? Any thoughts? The corners are perfect.

  • I have had cards that on their first trip to PSA were 8s, and their second trip were 10s. I had a card go from a 6 to a 9 before.
Sometimes it is just the luck of the draw.

If the grade don't fit, re-sub-mit!

I'm hardly the expert that some here are , but both left corners look a tad soft , especially the top left. Its really hard to tell without a real close picture, but there looks to be a bit of shading on both corners. Thats my 1/4 cent worth.

Can't see that card being less than an 8 - although they are always tough on HOF RC's.

    Looks fine. Resubmit.

  • PSA 7 excludes the possibility of the grade being due to wrinkle. PSA 7 --> 9 is a common thing.

    Go for it!

If the grade don't fit, you must resubmit

So in other words what you are saying is that they did not correctly grade it the first time. I hear people spouting all the time on these "upgrades". Have any of you sent the original graded(now cracked open case) back to Joe with proof of this? I would be interested to hear any "true" stories of this and your results with Joe. I'm sure the stock market would be interested as well.

I have not sent them back in the holder, I have cracked and resubmitted several times and in all but a very few cases the cards upgraded. In a couple cases they've jumped 2 grades. It's a game...unfortunately.

You really don't believe this happens ALL the time? Trust me, it does. I would venture that I have approximately 15-20 PSA 10s right now in hand that were PSA 8 or 9 at one point. Most are 1993 Refractors, but I also have applied this to 1996 Mantle Refractors, 1990 Leaf Thomas, 1995 Select Mirror Gold, and 1994 Hot Gloves.

When you have humans grading cards, this is expected. Even the difference between a 9 and 10 ON PAPER is subjective...

I specifically had this issue with some 89 Score football I submitted. I had 8's go to 10's, 9's go to 8's, 8's to 9's... I still can't tell the difference between an 8 and a 10 in most cases and I have most of them in 10's now. Even under 10x there is little difference in many cases. The nice thing is, 8's are usually very cheap and in many cases there aren't "touches" on the corners and they will bump. Most 9's are 10's on another day. Just depends on if you want to play the game or not. On some of the nicer cards, it's worth it.

Check to ensure there is no print snow or other print defects. Otherwise I agree, resubmit!

Regardless, that card does not belong in a PSA 7 case...
  • Good day,
Lots of great stories of re-submit and upgrades. Keep in mind that this is the upside. Last year re-submitted 27 1966 Batman that were all 9's, (Straight out of the only vending box to ever turn up of these so far) hoping to pull a couple of 10's, Waste of money, not a 1, all came back 9's!!!

I once had a psa 8 1972 Topps Frank Robinson that I thought could 9. I cracked it and it came back a PSA 10. I think I wet myself!

The only thing I can think of with that Montana is that it has either a) some surface imperfection, or b) slight paper loss on the corners (which wouldn't show up to the naked eye, since the surface is white, but would show up with a loupe).
  • envoy98envoy98 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭
It's possible there are surface dents, print spots, snow (as previously mentioned) or maybe a very small surface wrinkle on the back or a curl. The print defects probably aren't enough on their own merits to warrant a 7 grade assuming the corners are sharp. The other flaws would be. I would loupe it again, put it under a halogen light and see if you can see anything else.

If you listed that card raw on ebay with a huge scan and guaranteed it's untrimmed, you will get close to 9 money for it. That centering for a Montana RC is off the charts.

I had a Carew MSA disc that was a 5.

I cracked it out, resubed, and it came back a PSA 9.

That is when I started selling anything that was 9 or above to those who still place a premium on those numbers.

I have never resubmitted a card but I WOULD resub that one. Looks like AT LEAST an 8 no matter what. Good luck!
  • What about the back of the card? Many times, people overlook centering and other issues with the back of the card. Just a thought....
