<< <i>My collection kicks everyone's butt because the stuff I have in my collection is stuff I want, not stuff that some "expert" says I should collect or what $$$$ tells me I should collect. If I buy it, it's because I want it to be a part of my collection and that's it.

In regards to how collecting has changed, back when I was a kid you bought packs so that you could get a complete set. You wanted to have one of every card that the company produced that year. Some of those cards would be valuable at that time, yes that's a given, however back then you didn't buy a pack hoping to get some ultra uber-rare card that you could immediately sell and make money off of. Now a days, people buy packs not because they want to complete a set, but because they want these ultra short printed variations and other "one of a kind" type cards that they can immediately sell and make money off of. The problem is that collecting really isn't for collecting anymore. It's for turning a big profit and that is really kind of sad.

(Please note that not EVERYBODY collects for the lottery aspect of it. There are still those of us who collect for the sake of collecting. It's just that this lottery mentality has made the price of collecting skyrocket and if you are a one-player type collector who wants one of every card made for a certain player, you lose. You CAN NOT complete those collections, EVER. That's just how it is today in the 1/1 madness. Let's see somebody get the 1/1 platinum, the four 1/1 printing plates, the copper and gold variations as well as the first edition variation and the red and white backed cards for 2007 Topps for any player in that set. You just can't do it). >>

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
