Errrrrr. I don't think so. Take a good look at that statement and re think it. And then edit it out and then take a look at about 100 top collections and see were your 80's and 90's collection stands. Just last week one ultimate collection came available for sale in Mastro's. Estimates are that it will sell for 7 figures.

i'm kinda hesitant to post girlie pics with the poofing and all, but i did wanna show off a couple pics of my collection, so here goes:
this is a pic of my collection in its infancy stage, there's not really much to tell about it, the pic is self-explanatory.....i was very proud, though
and here's a pic of my collection in the later stages of development, as you can see it takes some pretty strong guys to help me carry it around
well, that's all for now, i just wanted to let you know that my collection is pretty much like everyone else's collection, and it's a beautiful world!

My collection kicks everyone's butt because the stuff I have in my collection is stuff I want, not stuff that some "expert" says I should collect or what $$$$ tells me I should collect. If I buy it, it's because I want it to be a part of my collection and that's it.
In regards to how collecting has changed, back when I was a kid you bought packs so that you could get a complete set. You wanted to have one of every card that the company produced that year. Some of those cards would be valuable at that time, yes that's a given, however back then you didn't buy a pack hoping to get some ultra uber-rare card that you could immediately sell and make money off of. Now a days, people buy packs not because they want to complete a set, but because they want these ultra short printed variations and other "one of a kind" type cards that they can immediately sell and make money off of. The problem is that collecting really isn't for collecting anymore. It's for turning a big profit and that is really kind of sad.
(Please note that not EVERYBODY collects for the lottery aspect of it. There are still those of us who collect for the sake of collecting. It's just that this lottery mentality has made the price of collecting skyrocket and if you are a one-player type collector who wants one of every card made for a certain player, you lose. You CAN NOT complete those collections, EVER. That's just how it is today in the 1/1 madness. Let's see somebody get the 1/1 platinum, the four 1/1 printing plates, the copper and gold variations as well as the first edition variation and the red and white backed cards for 2007 Topps for any player in that set. You just can't do it).
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
Doesn't make any difference. The sport was the same. The Pucketts and Dimaggios are always there. The Problem with Barry Sanders? He QUIT too damn soon. I don't collect people. I collect cards. then give them to people who like sports.. call me dumb if you don't wanna give stuff away there's a giant tub at the salvation army.....all in rubber bands
I'll trade you a 1/1 collectors plate of Sammy Sosa AND a superfractor of Mark McGwire for a microgram of 258md. This stuff with half-lifes how do you keep that stuff? Do you think the FBI is watching you because of your hobby? I know I do.

The FBI can watch me all they want. I have nothing that is illegal to own and I am not breaking any laws. The only people who worry about the FBI and/or the police are those who ARE doing illegal things. If you aren't breaking the law there is nothing to worry about.
As for short half-live samples, they are either represented by a photo of the place/person the element was named after, or by a sample of raw ore/debris from locals around the world that would have one or two atoms of the element at any given time. In reality, those are just parts of the collection that nobody can complete.

My collection would be a lot more valuable if I could get it in alphabetical order. My problem is that somewhere along the J's or K's I get confused and the whole project falls apart.

There's a HUGE difference between only having ONE in existance (Such as the 1/1s which are becoming popular now for some reason) and the elements like Mendelevium, Nobelium, Ununhexium, etc. in which in the time it takes to extract the one or two atoms which do exist for that element they have long since decayed. I do have in my possesion a sample of EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT which you can LEGALLY own. The only reason I don't have certain elements such as plutonium or protactinium is that it would be against the law for me to possess them.

Ahhhh. I think I win the "took ya long enough" award for the day. I had no idea what animal it was in all those pictures in this thread, but now I know that it is a camel's leg.
