Home PSA Set Registry Forum

Where is an "Official 1967 Topps Baseball" forum? Is this it?

Doesn't 1967 seem to be the most 'under the radar' discussion group of all? There are tons of Registry sets, but other than occasional cards for sale, I can never find any dialogue about the cards themselves.

Shall we begin?

There isn't a pre-existing one, really. So, in answer to your question...yeah, I think this is it. image

Is it just my imagination (or is it just because I am trying to buy them), or are 1967 PSA 8's going for a higher percentage over SMR than any set of the 60's? Maybe even the 50's!

That 526 Tigers Rookies from last week was absolutely out of this world!
  • Don't know the answer to your queston but this IS a great set. When I decided to try and complete a set from the '60s, this was one of the ones I thought really hard about.

High numbers and semi-highs from any set of that immediate era are always sought after, but if someone puts up a slew of 67's...it's get hot and heavy, really fast. There is a lot of stuff available, but there is a lot of demand for it, as well.

I'm a bit out of the game (I've been concentrating on Football for the last couple of months), but I was mainly trying to get star cards and cards of guys that I really like first, then move out from there.

I just got the cubs team card graded in a 9. It is very rare in that grade. It will be on ebay in a couple of weeks. The 1967's are a beautiful set of cards. One of the nicest sets of all.
  • SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
    A Cubs 9??? Sweet!

I wonder if it will go for as much as the PSA 8 Stanley that I am holding my breath on tomorrow night. And an 8 Cash, too.

    Hope hope hope...

If anyone starts an official 1967 forum I would love to participate. This set is my favorite. I'm having trouble finding 3 cards I need to complete my set: 470 Bob Shaw, 477 Braves Team and 485 Tim McCarver. I'm looking for them in either a PSA 7 or 8. After I complete the set I'll probably try to upgrade it some. A Labor of love, the first baseball cards I ever bought were 1967. Right now my mid grade set is #20 on the registry.

This thread desperately needs a scan. First scan = first card in the set:

    << <i>477 Braves Team >>

That one does not come up very often. It's the only team card I'm really interested in. The team is important to me, of course, but it's also the only naturalistic photo. All the others have colored backgrounds that rob the card of a lot of it's visual appeal.

Here are a few scans of some of my stuff, most of which I've posted before in the Mail Call thread.

Hi all...am also working on this set and am 58% complete in 7s and 8s. Does anyone have doubles to trade or sell? Let me know.

My set is on the registry as Favorite 60s Set.

    Thanks in advance to all.

Guys...how do you post those great looking cards on the thread? Thanks!
  • GDM67GDM67 Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭✭
You have to find an image hosting site (I use photobucket.com), upload the photo you have saved on your computer's hard drive and then link it here by putting the IMG code into your response.

I scanned the Perry and Hunter cards myself, but the other scans are from the auctions I won.

I'm reading Tom Adelman's book about that season and Series, Black and Blue, right now.
  • Guys:

I have a number of 67 dups up for trade or sale - see my Treadway2 registry set - around 40th place or so - and yes nice to have a discussion on this set - beautiful set with tremednous competition - I am trying to upgrade to 9's here and there but the economics are out of sight so I just sit!

Beautiful set, no question. I don't have very many 67's, but ran across some several weeks ago, and submitted them.

    This is one hot set!

I too am trying to upgrade from 8s to 9s and currently am 10th or 11th on the registry with I think an 8.31.

It is brutal. I probably lose on ebay 90% or more of the time and I think I am bidding aggressively! I am sure Treadway feels the same way as I see him as a careful bidder. And there are a number of aggressive bidders as well.

super set indeed--got a high grade set from Mastro 2 years ago with about 50 cards graded--will try to post some pics as time pernits

which cards are the most difficult to get in PSA-8 or better?????
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
These are not low supply cards but high demand cards. Believe 4 cards with pops less than 30 in psa 8(86 McCormick,90 Nash, 402 Phils Rookies and 457 Etchebarren).
  • SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
Couple other toughies in PSA 8: 28 Priddy 399 Worthington 454 Checklist 526 Tigers Rookies: this one went for over $300 the other night!

  • SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
Ron - if your #10 Matty Alou is for sale, I am a buyer.

    Nick

  • Other toughies - the demeter (#572) romano (#196) and Duke Sims (3) - real tough -

In terms of the upgrade process to 9's from 8's I also lose 90% of the time as just can't go to the levels of others - and yes USED TO think am aggressive - but compared to others ....

Really is a great set I have been collecting it for about 10 years and finally have all 8s - how long have each of you been working it?

I picked up my first PSA graded card (the Catfish Hunter pictured earlier in the thread) in early July, last year. I spent the next six months or so working on it. I sort of put it on the back burner in early January to work on my 72 Football set. I'll be taking it back up in earnest before too long.

The 67's ROCK No Doubt About It!!

There are about 6 to 8 guy's with deep pockets that go after the rare or pristine examples.
Doesn't even make a differeence if they have them or not.
That is what makes it tough as DAV mentioned.

I'm presently 4th on the CU Registry with a GPA of 8.68 and it is pretty tough moving up because guy's
will throw some pretty heavy change at these, more than I am willing to spend on the last 100 or so cards I need in PSA 9's.

Thank Goodness I didn't have to try and build my set going head to head with the heavy hitter's on ebay.
  • A tough card that is not a low pop is Orlando Cepeda. Cardinal fans want it, MVP collectors want it, HOF collectors want it & of course, 67 set builders NEED it. Cepeda is tough.

Mickey Stanley is another. The card has centering problems & is tough to get in a nicely centered 8.

Pirates Team is another tough to find centered card.

Best set of the '60s for sure! '65 is a distant second in my opinion. Love the simple design and great pictures. I'm trying to get ahold of a PSA 9 Luis Tiant (had one in my grasps, but the collector sold it on eBay for more because I slacked! image ) and also trying to pick up some of my other player set cards in PSA 8 or better (Tony Perez, Tony Oliva, Bert Campaneris, Camilo Pascual) and I almost always get outbid.

Good luck to those of you out there trying to complete/upgrade the set!

In the past month or so I was lucky enough to pick up both a PSA 9: Luis Tiant & Tony Perez, both beautiful examples.
It took me at least a year of looking to find them.
My good friend George L. that has a very nice 67 set of his own ended up with my PSA 8's.
The photography of those two cards, are off the charts IMHO, and help make the 1967 Topps Baseball Set what it is.
    Two Fantastic looking cards!!

Thinking about this thread further, to me the true "vintage" era ended in 1967. Lots of collectors and dealers will say that 1969 and earlier is the demarcation line, and others will bump it up to 1972 or 1975. But in terms of value and availability of high grade cards, there is a clear marking point between pre-67 and post-67. I know in completing my own Topps run, I'm considering moving back my own plan to build completely graded sets to '67 and before, with the exception of '71 Topps.

    Ron,

I sort of agree with you. I have been calling 60s semi-vintage but if one were going to draw a line between vintage and non-vintage I would call it 1967.

On another topic--0 for 5 on the psa 9s on ebay again last night. Seems we have seen almost a doubling of price on the cards I need to upgrade(about 70 percent of the set).

    Buchek pop 21 $148!!!
    Rigney pop 11 $155
    Reynolds pop 10 $153
    Torre pop 9 $265
    Watt pop 13 $124

This all occurring while 1965s--the other set I am upgrading 8s to 9s are flat over the past year.

Also large number of bidders--I keep losing to different people--this time Duke of Mint, mj1 power, ice33_19 and cards collect.

Good luck finding one of these. the last one I saw went for about $1500 I think on ebay a few months ago, and there were several bidders at that level - it was perhaps the nicest one I have seen. Popular card + short supply = big bucks.
