INTERVIEW FOR MESSAGE BOARD MEMBERS

This is for all that want to participate. I thought it would be neat to sort of interview everybody. I find these boards very helpful for my hobby endeavors and very entertaining. I thought we all might want to know a little more about the ones we communicate with on a daily basis. I will just list a few questions. Just copy and paste the questions to your post and type your answers. I will try to stay focused on the hobby. Some questions might stray a little, though. Keep in mind, they don't have to be a discussion or anything like that, just straight answers would be fine. They will be off the top of my head as I type here. Here goes...

    1. Name?
    Estil

    2. Age?
    I'll be 27 this March 22.

    3. Family?
My lovely wife Denise (married since 6/17/05); we have no children unless you count our Care Bears. image

    4. How long have you collected?
I've bought packs here and there in the mid 1990s, but it wasn't until I got into college (late 1999) that I really started to get really serious about it (once I had the money to be serious of course). I've always collected just baseball (and some non-sport sets) but I'm not starting to think about getting into Topps football as well.

    5. What is the main focus of your collection?
Complete sets!! image See Question 7 for more info.

    6. What was the first pack of cards you remember opening?
When I was nine years old, my father first got me into collecting, and always bought either 1989 Donruss or 1989 Topps (naturally, those were among the first complete sets I bought). In the mid 1990s I got back into it again as a teen and first got mostly 1993 Topps jumbo packs (cuz you got five gold cards per pack) and then I got mostly the major set packs; my favorites were 1994 Fleer and 1994 Ultra cuz you got an insert in every pack and they were quite interesting.

    7. What is the centerpiece of your collection?
My complete run of Topps sets from 1978-2004 (which I hope to get up to 1974-present). I also take pride in my 1981-95 Fleer set run (still need 1993 though) and my Ultra run 1991-95 as well as my collection of insert sets of Fleer and Ultra from 1992-95. I also own nearly all major 1980s unopened packs.

    8. What is the best deal you have ever made (most money made)?
    9. What is the worst deal you have ever made (most money lost)?
Not enough selling experience to really be able to answer.

    10. Would you still enjoy collecting cards if they were worthless?
Yes, in fact the only reason I could possibly do master sets of mid 1990s Fleer and Ultra is BECAUSE the insert sets, for the most part, are so affordable.

    11. What is your favorite team (maybe one in each sport)?
The University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team!! image The fact I hold two BAs from there (history and political science) might have something to do with that too. image My wife is originally from Boston, so naturally she LOVES the Red Sox and to a much lesser extent, the Patriots (she doesn't follow the Celtics much at all). I would absoultely LOVE it if Kentucky got a major league franchise of some kind (Louisville had a chance to get the NBA Grizzlies a few years back), especiall baseball.

    12. Who is your favorite player (maybe one in each sport)?
    Don Mattingly

    13. If you have children, do they collect?
We have no children (in fact, for medical reasons, my wife cannot have children) again, unless you count our Care Bears image

    14. What do you do for a living?
I'm a cashier at our local Kroger grocery store (which I'm sorry to say only pays a little over $7/hour image ). My wife is on permanent disablity and also works as a at-home customer service rep for various companies

    15. Do you have any other hobbies?
Video games; my favorites are Mega Man (especially Legends and Battle Network), Zelda, Metroid, and Sonic. I currently own a Nintendo DS, Playstation 2, GameCube, and I hope someday to get a Nintendo Wii

    16. (Touchy, I know, though I don't know why) What is your religion? Denomination?
I was baptised a Roman Catholic my freshman year at college (Easter 2000), but now my spiritual beliefs are, to say the least, rather unorthodox. I do not believe in the concept of eternal punishment nor the mainstream Christian stance towards homosexuality (which I believe both gay rights as well as unborn rights are no different than the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s), so I'm not sure if I'm even a good Christian anymore. I absoultely positively do not believe there is such a thing as a "one true religion".

    17. (Another touchy one) What is your political affiliation or leanings? Republican? Democrat? Independent?
This one is a lot easier to answer, eh, sort of. My political ideology would be best described as conservative libertarian. Although I'm a dittohead (Rush Limbaugh fan), my ideology is probably closer to that of Bill O'Reilly or John Stossel. I wouldn't make a good Democrat due to my stance on abortion, gun rights, and the war in Iraq. But I wouldn't make a good Republican either because of my stance on the death penalty and gay rights. As far as my voting style goes, I tend to only vote for national offices (President, House, Senate) and constitutional amendment refrendums. I've so far only voted for Republicans since I seem to identify more with them on a national level, though if a good pro-life, conservative Democrat comes along and runs for President in 2008, I'll gladly take him/her over a pro-choice Republican any day of the week.

    18. What is your favorite current TV show?
    Simpsons and South Park

    19. What is your all time favorite TV show?
Star Trek, especially Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise. I didn't even care about Trek until I met my wife, so I guess I'm what you call a Trek-convert. We now have ALL the Star Trek DVDs. image

    20. If you were designing a "Mt Rushmore of Sports", who would be on it?
I couldn't even begin to decide, even if it was just one sport and one decade.

    21. What would be your dream job?
Perhaps working at Topps and getting employee only sets and getting to see how cards are made. Though my REAL dream would be to go into outer space like they do in Star Trek, although I'll have to wait until I'm 83 years old (2063) before Zefran Cochrane invents warp drive. image

    22. Who in your life has had the most influence on you?
    My wife

    23. If you played sports, how far did you go?
I was student manager at Daviess County High for varsity baseball (1998 and 1999) and football (1998)

    24. What was your best sports achievement?
In 1998 our baseball team came three outs short of a Sectional Championship (state Final Four). Our 1998 football team only went 4-6, but we did pull off a huge upset of our arch-rival Apollo High (on their homecoming night and while ranked #6 in the state no less!).

    25. Have you ever dunked a basketball on a ten foot rim? If yes, how tall are you?
Hell no, are you nuts? I'm only 5'10"!

    26. Best sports moment you've ever witnessed in person?
In 1998, when Kentucky came back from 17 points down against Duke to go the Final Four (thus avenging the 1992 heartbreaker) and ultimately the National Championship. Unfortunately, we haven't been back to the Final Four since. image But perhaps that'll change this year? image

Also, watching Cal Ripken play in his magical 2,131st consecutive game with my grandpa, although he claimed they were "making something out of nothing". image

Sorry, I just realized it's in person. In that case it'd be when I was at Rupp Arena when Kentucky upset #1 ranked Florida sometime in Feb 2003 (only a few months away from graduation); the first time since 1979 Kentucky beat a top ranked team at Rupp. I was VERY disappointed we didn't get to storm the court though. image

    27. What would you change about our hobby?
To go back to the way things were in the mid-1990s. You still had a good variety of sets/hi-tech cards and such, but at least it was kept within reason. Same goes for game-used jersey and 1/1 cards. They would be awesome if they were kept within reason.

    28. Would you ever sell your collection if you ever got in bad financial trouble?
We already are in bad finanical trouble (credit card debt), so obviously the answer is no. I deeply regret selling my 1976-79 Topps sets (for only $600 at that!) a few years back (I got new 1978 and 1979 sets now, just need the 1976 and 1977 sets now), so I've now learned my lesson about what happens if you're not careful with what you sell. Now the only time I sell cards is if they don't fit my collection's theme (and I now only have a few sets like that left).

    29. How many time per day do you check your submission online?
    I don't do graded cards.

    30. What is your favorite book?
Beckett Baseball Card Almanac and the Complete Peanuts series.
