Beyond this impending fiasco ....

These breaks appeared to be a great great thing for this forum. The community drew a tad closer and friendlier. It is a damn shame to have things turn out like this. In the end I would hope future breaks happen and happen ONLY with a guy like Steve Hart shipping material.

It was a great idea and I will continue to participate if there are certain people involved in the organizing of it. I think that we are really a great group of people and we can't let anyone (guilty or not) mess that up.

    I agree.

We should still do the rips but send all the funds to Steve direct and like you said, have Steve send out all the product. That way there is no doubt!

There are certainly enough reputable people here to continue to run them (if they want to).
    Who is Rober Maris?

    Agree 100%

Does anyone know if Steve would be willing to do this (as far as collecting, sometimes dozens, payments from people)? As long as Steve was shipping I would do another rip.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    I must also agree with the overall character of the members of this forum. Raw collector or graded; vintage, prewar, or modern;
big time collector or small budget, Emmitt Smith or Luis Tiant; we all share the same passion and joy in the search. That may be
our weakness that leaves us sometimes vulnerable to the wolves in sheep's clothing.

When the dust has settled on this we may be poorer, a bit wiser, and more skeptical, but we will continue to pursue our Moby Dick
    through any storm.

open lines of communication is so important in forums such as these. it allows potential problems to be brought to light much quicker and gives a much better chance of that problem being solved.

I loved (the idea) of the 77-85 baseball rip I was in. Got crap and opted out of the football rip.

I hope that we can work out in the future to make it work.

Can we have a board member collect the money and then pay Steve at one time with the direct shipping information?

Exactly why I didn't do the football rip as well, nothing but crap in the baseball rip.

I posted this notion in the other thread. The writing was on the wall regarding Gary quite a while ago (ala Steve's warning...) and it is downright idiotic for there to be a middle man on these sorts of things. Steve is probably the most reputable guy in the business. If it costs a few extra dollars to do it this way -- so be it. You're asking for troubles when you trust faceless people over the internet explicitly.

  • I was quite surprised at how everyone jumped on these box breaks when the guy running the show was some new poster whom no one in this forum had any transactions with. I did the very first rip...but, that was with ajw as the middle man...a guy many board members vouched for. Once the breaks started with 80's junkie, i lost all interest. The amount of money spent was just way too much given the risk of sending money to a complete stranger.

Then again, we shouldnt assume. Afterall, regardless of your standing with fellow board members, the number of posts you have and the length of time youve been posting on the board...we still are practically strangers and anyone here can be capable of ripping you off (see jrdolan).

I'm upset just like everyone else. But, I'm not sure what we can do unless Steve is willing to pool money and ship individually. I'd also be happy to organize/ship another pack pool and do it in an honest and straightforward manner so we can begin to forget the past, but I don't know of reasons why everyone should trust me over other people. I do have 100% eBay feedback, but even that can be misleading, as we've seen in the past. What else can we do to ensure an honest transaction beyond extra work for Steve?
